Weatherby Vanguard - .300 Wby Mag - Help please

Hey guys,

I just bought a Weatherby Vanguard in a .300 Wby Mag which has a 24" barrel. I am looking for some load advice so I can figure out a good place to start with some reloading. What kind of velocity are you getting with your 24 inch barrels. What kind of OAL lengths are you doing? And what size of groups you are getting.

This was my first Magnum.It was in a Winchester Mod. 70 XTR with the 24" barrel. It would touch holes at a hundred and knock down the ram at 500 meters every time. It's not the hotest load but like JD338 says "accuracy kills."
The load is for 180 gr. Nos. Partitions. The OAL is factory OAL . The load is 77 gr. IMR 4350 for a velocity of 3145 fps. I used CCI 250 primers and kept the case length to 2.85". This was the only load I ever used except when I substituted Rem cor-loct bullets for target use only.
I hope it works as good for you as it had for me for 20+ years.

Did you ever use Fed 215 Magnum primers with that load. I have alot of Federal primers i can use. But maybe it would be a good idea to try a different primer. thanks for the info, it will help out alot

My first recomendation would be to use fed 215 primers with I 7828. If that doesn't work great then work with re22 and then h1000. I would load the first rounds as long as the clip will allow for good recycling.
I would say you should easily reach 3200 fps with a 24" barrel.
MY starting point would be 83 grains 7828 under a 180 bullet. If partitions don't shoot try accubonds.
One last caution the above loads are with wby brass ....if you use rem brass reduce loads about 2 grains and work up as rem brass has alot less capacity.

I don't think it would be a problem. If you're concerned, step back to H4831 and see how you like it. I haven't had good velocities from H4831, however, in a 26" Mark V a friend had me work up for.

Has anybody tried the new IMR Hybrid 100V in the IMR load book those got pretty good speeds with a 180 gr. bullet out of a 24 inch barrel.

Hey Pop, would it be too much trouble to get the same information for a 180 gr. Partition for the same rifle? and a 180 gr. Tipped X-Bullet. I would greatly appreciate it if you could. thanks.
