What if?

I doubt any big game animal can tell the difference. Just my opinion.

GASP!!!! Fotis... what has come over you?!!!!!

I love big guns, no secret there but I know you can kill an elk with a 270 or a 25-06 in short order by:
a) picking the right bullet
2) placing it in the right spot.

That said I'd still like to take one with my 458 Lott! 350 Barnes TSX at 2800+ fps (the sicko that I am!)

Scotty said.... he said....
Boolit I wasn't meaning to demean the 270 one bit. Just saying they are about the same.

I think someone here said....."
The 257WBY beats it on about all fronts. Scotty

Wonder who that was? LOL

No worries buddy. It is just my unnatural ability to tune the 270 Win out most of the time. Same with the 30-06. Both are so well rounded it is hard to need too much more than either one. Although I do love the 270WSM, go figure! Scotty

Fotis,

A couple of years ago, I received a report of gentleman (?) taking a moose at 80 yards with his 50 BMG. I'd imagine that his game was skinned and quartered at that distance and with that particular cartridge. I do wish I had a picture of that.

Now that's confusing.. considering you and some others here are always pushing some other caliber above the 270 and the .30-06.... man I am confused...LOL

I betcha I know know why that is.... because you're easily influenced that there's always something bigger and better out there and you believe it..

Got me!

I'm gonna settle all this bickering here once and for all! If you have a 280, 280AI, a 7mm Mag, a "30-06", or a 300 magnum, you have all the elk gun you need. End of story! :p

That's a nice list of deer rifles you can take elk hunting. Real Elk guns start at .32 caliber and go up from there.

If you can handle them! What's more important is being able to put a quality bullet into the right spot! A gut shot elk is still a gut shot elk no matter what you shoot them with. You guys are killing me here.

Uh, guess I started what some might call a gentlemans' disagreement conversation...

Well, you are correct, not everyone can handle a real Elk Rifle, in which case they should take the best, real deer rifle they can handle. You mentioned several great examples. Carrying one of them is prefereble to someone staying home. But if you have to bring a varmit rifle, then you need to know your limitations, or pick a different critter to hunt.

257 Bee for varmint critters.... Now, there's a new twist.

"Uh, guess I started what some might call a gentlemans' disagreement conversation..."

Pretty much. Yes, I'd say so. That's okay - it's one heck of an interesting discussion.

Oh yeah, Grandpa used long-range ground squirrels as his excuse for his .257 Weatherby.

Guy, and in that sense, it is great to have learned from our fore fathers! My Grandad had an old Winchester lever gun in 348 Winchester. What a great shooting rifle. I was lucky to be able to carry it during an elk season back in '78.

It is a great debate for sure, and fun harassing each other just a bit. I was just going to say, go back to page one for pictures of proof positive of the effectiveness of those varmint rounds!

Well, 6mm, someone knew their limitations, and took a shot well within them.
I just have to wonder if Grandpa was standing behind which ever of those fine young men that shot that nice cow elk with a rifle who's caliber started with a 3.

That 348 Winchester is an awesome round. Talk about a powerhouse in a lever rifle. I hope to have one them in the future. Winchester is making a run of them so hopefully i can get on one of them. Scotty

I want one of them too...one of the few old lever rifles that I want. I would sell the 358 BLR if I could find one.
