I'm gonna settle all this bickering here once and for all! If you have a 280, 280AI, a 7mm Mag, a "30-06", or a 300 magnum, you have all the elk gun you need. End of story! :p

That's a nice list of deer rifles you can take elk hunting. Real Elk guns start at .32 caliber and go up from there.

You boys make me laugh that is for sure. Its like Coke and Pepsi, Chevy and Ford, whatever floats your boat is the best choice. (For the record its Pepsi and Dodge for me)

I have never lost an elk with my 30-06.

That doesn't mean there aren't better choices around.

That doesn't mean its only a deer rifle.

I plan to get something .32 Magnum or bigger one of these days but for now in this crap economy I will just stick with my 30-06 and enjoy every bite of elk meat I have till times get better.

Yeah Antelope_Sniper I agree with that. That makes sense.

I am all about shooting the biggest gun you can shoot. But you gotta be able to shoot it.

My Dad used to use a 22-250 for deer until he lost one with a hit that if he would've been shooting something bigger wouldve downed him. I personally feel that nothing smaller than a 243 should be allowed for deer in any case. I feel like the minimum standard caliber for elk rifles should be increased to .264 as well. (Here in Oregon its .224 for deer and .243 for elk)

I just like to use what I shoot well. Currently I have nothing over 30 cal though someday soon I hope to get something in the 8mm Rem Mag, 325 WSM, 338 Win Mag range.

P.S.

I will compromise if its Coke in the glass bottle, but no other coke will do, it has to be Pepsi!

I stopped drinking Pepsi when they started giving money to the Anti-gunners back in the mid 80's. With their new CEO who's a former Marine, I belive they've stop that. In addition they recently introduced "retro" Pepsi with the real sugarcane sugar. Might have to give that a try. IMO, for both bottlers, the old stuff was much better.

I agree, I'd like to see a .264 Minimum on elk. In this state it's .243 and a 85gr bullet. Could we at leat move it up to .25 cal and a 120gr bullet for elk??

I can't disagree with any of the 3 you mentioned for elk. Dad and I use the .338, Uncle used the 8mm Mag, and the .325 WSM in a Nosler 48 would just be a great rifle. But these are not calibers a person should generally start with. They are something you have to grow into. All of the above choice would be wrong for both my Wife and Son. I guess that's why they carry a .270 Win, and .270 WSM wiht 140gr AB's when hunting.

For the record its Pepsi and Dodge for me

My condolences. I will agree that a hole or two through the lungs makes it hard for an elk to survive, regardless of the size of the hole. However, even "holey" elk manage to cover an amazing amount of ground before they go to ground.

Whoa are you trying to slight the mighty Dodge Mike? I can take all of the caliber ruckus but trucks, well sir, you have crossed the line! Ha! Scotty

No slight intended, but yes, I must dis the mighty Dodge. Ever since I found a bug in two Pepsis in a row while living in Texas, I've had some difficulty drinking the stuff. I confess, I'm a loyal Coke fan. It is almost as addictive as Winchester rifles.

I can just leave your rig hooked up to my truck that way we wont spend so much time getting you unstuck!

Brian I think I'm way past an intervention. Scotty

Are you dissing the mighty Ford? Surely not! Though it is well-known that I did have to permit a Dodge to pull my Ford out of the mud. However, in fairness, an LEO was driving when he got it stuck!

Who? Me? What? Scotty

Dodge or Ford? Pepsi or Coke? Man, you'd think that John King found his way to this site. With all the serious questions he asked GOP presidential candidates, now we're seeing the same degree of serious exploration here!

Well, if you are comfortable enough in your manhood to drive a Dodge...

Score one for BK! I have to love the humour on this site. Laughter is good for the soul.

I have to question my decision making process... pick on the Jarhead... dumb!

I should be OK. If there's one thing Marines have, it's discipline.

And if you do show up at my house, bring rifles, lots and lots of rifles. And give me a heads up so I can get the http://www.traegergrills.com/ fired up. I finally managed to be home the same weekend as the local gun club was doing new member initiation day, so now I can go to a great facility only 15-20 minutes away! Yay!
