I am considering re-barreling one of my old rifles to the 6.5x284 Norma. I want to get a 1 in 8.5 twist barrel to shoot the 130gr AccuBond bullets. What kind of speed should I expect from a 24" barrel? Most of the reloading manuals show that 2900-3000 should be attainable but I wondered if anyone had tried one with this short a barrel.

Thanks!

QuickLoad projects with 130 g. AB and a maximum charge of H1000 that you should get 3072 fps in a 24 inch barrel. My own experience with the 6.5 X 284 would say that the velocities you seek are well within reach of a 24 inch barrel.

My 6.5x284 was build to handle the 142gr bullets and had a longer barrel 28". If I was going to build one for the 130gr bullets I'd be looking at maybe a Broughton 5c barrel http://www.rifle-barrels.net/. the owner of Broughton barrel guy by the name of Tim North was a 1000 yd BR shooter using one of his 5c barrel in 6.5x284 and he has alot of good information and I'd sure talk to him about the 6.5x284 you want to build. He helped me alot with mine plus he makes a good barrel.

When I have something build and I'm looking at certain bullets etc I don't want to be at a max load I would want 3k plus you may wind up with a 24 1/2" barreel. You can always have a barrel cut down but you cann't add. Well good luck
