What the 7mmRM means to me.

Growing up in northern WI, everyone had a 30-06 for deer hunting except one guy. He had a 7mmRM and every season he would sit over a huge swamp and put that Ruger M77 to work. Every time I heard him shoot, I would get excited and head for his stand to help him out because I knew something was down.

I also knew at a young age what true friendship was and this same person showed that in every way to me. When I was little, my mom asked me who my best friend was and after thinking about it, I said, "Gib". She was surprised I didn't say one of my other buddies my age but she laughed and said, "he is a great guy".

As I grew up, Gib and I shared a lot of time together in the woods and on the water. He was always there for me and willing to help a kid out. We had tree stands next to each other and together shot a lot of deer and caught a lot of fish. The times together were great. He was like an uncle to me even though we were not blood relatives.

About 9 months ago, we found out he had cancer and as I shot my late father-in-laws 7mmRM yesterday, all I could think about has him and Gib and all the great times. We knew time was getting close and when the phone rang this morning, I was not suprized to hear that my best buddy is now up in heaven looking down on us. I had to go downstairs and reload some 7mmRM in his honor and I plan on using the 7mm Mag this season while thinking about him. I don't hunt where him and I use to, but I think, I will make a point to walk back to his stand and say hello to my old buddy.

I will never hear or see the words 7mmRM and not think of him.

A great tribute to your mentor and friend. Thanks for posting, WT.

Thank you to the Nosler Forum and the great people here. I know everyone here would understand the post and meaning. My wife cares but doesn't understand the hunting/fishing bond like others.

That's good stuff WT. Sorry for the loss of your buddy. I think running that 7 Rem Mag will make your old partner smile down... Hopefully you can use it to stuff an elk or three...

Sorry for your loss. Thanks for the great post to honor your friend. I think the 7mm RM will do quite nicely this fall for you and for Gib.

That is a great post. Gib must have been a great guy.

Enjoy your range and field time with your 7mm Rem mag!

This is one of the last deer we got together. I was the lucky one who shot but it was near his stand. I also shot my first buck out of his stand. He made me sit in it one afternoon so I could get a deer. He was a great guy and he loved that old 7mm. I watched him shoot 3 bucks at one time with it. They were 150, 225, and 325 yards out. They kept looking back as they ran away and every time they stopped, he dropped one. It was crazy to see.

Great picture WT! Nice buck too. Sounds like a great shooter as well.

What ammo did he shoot out of his 7?

He shot factory Federal Premiums until the prices went crazy then we switched to Federal Fusions. I think he shot 160 grain bullets. He had a 3-9 VX-II on the rifle. He was a very good shot and was calm and relaxed. He shot a few shots before the season started and that was all for practice. Just 3-4 shots to make sure the zero was still there.

I would love to buy the rifle from his wife, but I think it will stay in the family as it should. We all hunted together and I would love to see his nephew get it and hunt with it because he now sits in that tree on opening weekend.

WT - what a nice tribute. I hope such things are always welcome here, I appreciate them. It also made me think back to my mentor, another great guy. An excellent hunter and fisher for sure, but also taught me reloading, stock bedding, rimfire target shooting, and gentleness and kindness. He took an interest in me when he had no reason to. We've been blessed!

WT - Sorry for your loss. My Dad only had one center fire rifle. A Herters Mauser in 7mmRM. I cant say any thing more.... CL

I'm sorry for your loss WT!!! But not at all sorry for what you have gained knowing this man, these are the guys that seem few and far between these days.
Who knows looks like you may or could become the same kind of mentor to his nephew.
Still heart felt condolences to you and Gibs family and extended family.

Sorry to hear you lost such a good friend WT. Although Gib is know longer with you, he's in a better place without the cancer that took his life, but will still live on in the hearts of those that knew him.

Sorry for your loss, you shared some great times together I'm sure and that will never be taken from you.

WT,

Sorry to hear that you lost a great friend. Gib is smiling down upon you.

Life is so short...I'm glad you have great memories of him! There is much to be said about the men we admire and look up to in our young lives. It helps make us men ourselves. You had some great adventures!

Sorry for your loss WT, but I tell you what, those kind of memories are what the hunting and shooting sports are all about.

Everyone of us at some point will have something like this happen to us with our "mentor", whether that's a father, uncle, cousin, or just a good friend. Things like this bring a tear to my eye because it get's me thinking of great memories that I've had afield with someone just like Gib.

Take care, and take that ole 7mm REMINGTON MAGNUM out and put down some venison!
