Where to start for a hunting load

My advice is very simple. Sell all the reloading tools you have and buy some factory ammo. Also, never log into this site again because all you do is buy bullets, brass, powder, rifles and scopes. Stop yourself now!!!! Okay, I am joking. Hang around here and ask a million questions.

As far as seating bullets, I would buy a comparator and digital micrometer.

This fella is probably telling the truth....

So I measured the distance to the lands with my Hornady tool for my sons tikka 270wsm and came up with a 2.439 average, so I loaded some 140gr AB's with RL-22 and magpro to a length of 2.399 (.040 off). got all done they all looked good, then thought I better try them in the DM, well I'm lucky I did because they were to long to fit in the mag. I had to shorten them to 2.344 to fit in mag with just a little room to spare, that puts them .095 off the lands with these bullets. That seems like a long ways out?
That is one of the problems with most bullets , that are designed for very long range. They also "may"require a different barrel twist than your other bullets.

My .340 Weatherby needs binoculars to see the lands....

So the rounds I loaded with 59 grs of RL-22 at 2.344 shot as good or better than any thing this gun has shot, (it has never been a good shooting rifle) so this is giving us some hope. I also found some RL-19 today to try.

Make sure to post some targets as you shoot them. More the better.
Some of these guys can perform voodoo just looking at your targets and really get you dialed in with a load.
The more data you have with the targets the better also.(Load, OAL, bullet, primer, on and on)

I would disagree with this as my digital calipers just zapped themselves. Changed the battery, twice and still errors.

I went and bought a set of manual calipers and will probably not look back. Too much room for error with digital...calipers anyways.

my .02
