I just picked up a box of Federal 180 grain Trophy Bonded Tip and the case is nickel plated so I was wondering which case is better brass or nickel plated ?

Just depends on the loader. The nickel cases are more resistant to the elements. Some loaders have a problem with them. I have loaded thousands of them in pistol cases and have two rifles that have nothing but nickel brass used in them. Some makes of nickel brass do seem to have a better plating on them.Rick.

I prefer brass over nickel, but I certainly use the nickel cases. Just ensure that the cases are clean if you use the nickel-plated cases. Some people suggest that you don't get as much life out of a case. I really can't comment on that as I have not seen that in my experience (300 WSM, 7 RM and 280).

When nickel cases get old, they can become really tough to resize. If you ever size a mixed lot of brass, some brass, some nickel, you can usually tell which one's are nickel, because they are harder to size. For that reason alone, I typically stick to brass cases for rifles. If you use a leather cartridge belt, the nickel cases will not corrode like brass.

I have been using Winchester Nickel cases for my 270WSM and they have been really good. They clean up really well and seem to be lasting really well also. I am also using Federal Nickel cases in the 338WM. They seem to be a little thinner than the Winchester cases. I can't see a difference myself. Scotty

I use nickel for my 280 a/c that is what Winchester sells it in where I get my "brass". Never had any problems with it. Everything else is regular brass. I can go either way.
