Which Reticle?

I'm considering a Vortex HST 4-16X 44mm and the choices are their V-Plex or BDC. Which would be best for target shooting? It will be mounted on a .243 or 22-250, I haven't decided that yet.

If it is just for targets, their standard V-Plex would probably be enough. If you were going to hunt it, the BDC might be handy in order to have a few aiming points for further out.

I was leaning in that direction but without having hands on experience, I wasn't sure just how thick/thin the cross hairs may be. Hopefully, it may be comparable to Leupold's Duplex.

If I remember right all of the standard Duplex reticules are what they call 30-30 which means the fine wires will cover a 30" target at 100yds. So you can use that as a range finder and adjust for hold over at longer distances.

That can't be right...covers 30" of target? My old Leupold M8 16x has a very fine cross hair and I can section(quarter) a bench rest target with the 1/2" square, at 100 yards.

Bushnell, Simmons, Tasco, Weaver, Redfield and Leupold all had a 30-30 reticule which was a standard Duplex. You had 15" from center + to the bottom of the top thick cross hair, side to side and from center and to top of bottom thick cross hair. Can't remember the distance it was calculated at. I thought it was 100 yards since everyone copied it. This was very popular in the 1970's - 1980's.

I thought that's what you meant after I re-read it. I have a couple of Leupold's with the standard Duplex and have always liked them. The only scope I have, come to think of it, that doesn't have a Duplex reticle is my older M8 16X which has the fine cross hairs...perfect for target shooting and varmints. My Zeiss also has the Duplex.

I like the standard plex. I've had a few of the BDC type reticles from a few makers.... don't like them, they're just too busy to my eye and never seem to work as advertised.

Some of the newer ones are like a novel written in there- grids, numbers etc....makes me wish the German #1 was more popular. Guess I'm a "less is more" kind of guy.

Yes, you're right about the HS reticles. I had been looking at both the HS and HS-T to determine the difference other than the target turrets and it seems it's the style of reticle difference.

I think for my eyes at least, the V-Plex would be more suitable for target shooting as would the VMR-1(MOA) with the HS-T

For strictly paper I believe that I would go with their standard duplex. That is just my opinion though  if you could get to look through both of them it would likely help you on your decision making.

Blessings,
Dan
