They say it doesn't take much to kill a black bear, but I sure wouldn't want to track a wounded one into some tangle.

I'm going on a spring Bear hunt here in Ontario, and have taken several bears and Moose, trust me, bears are built tough, and are a lot tougher to kill than moose, and besides, make a much nicer trophy to boot 8)

Good luck, and shoot straight! (y)

Bears structurally are no tougher than whitetails, I've also found that when hit in the vitals they are no tougher to kill. Especially if shot when unsuspecting.

Griz and Browns riled up can soak up a lot of lead but the black bears are rarely as aggressive. Generally running off a few yards and dying. Moose are also relatively easy to kill but it takes s lot more doing to get a bullet into the vitals of a moose. Bone structure alone on s moose can stop even premium bullets in their tracks, bullets that would sail thru a bear without even slowing down.

I've seen moose take repeated shots soaking up lead like a sponge. Stiles up bull coming into the call expecting to fight another bull or a spooked moose can take repeated shits seeing not to notice. I have a keep shooting till their down policy on moose, rarely shooting one only once. Admiring the shot can lead to having to cut up a moose in the most in opportune locations, i.e. Thick brush or waist deep water. Neither is fun but in water is much more messy!

One thing about bears is they leave very poor blood trails. That's the main reason I liked the conical bullets over round ball.

I think I am going to look into the Hornady Great Plains bullets as well. They should do well if they shoot out of my rifle.

They should work well. They seat a lot easier than many sabot/bullet combos. Try shooting them at the distance you plan to put your stand. If they shoot ok there and you like them best, it doesn't really matter what the 100 yard group looks like.

I've only shot one bear with a front stuffer and I used a 295g powerbelt in front of (3) 50g pellets of 777. The bear was a 200lb dry sow and she didn't make it farther than 40 yds. I've watched bears run farther with 30-06 slugs in them. The best blood trail I've ever seen was from a 100g G5 broadhead. Just my $.02

I would try Powerbelts too if they will stabilize. They are about as easy as it gets to reload and generally shoot really well. I've killed close to a dozen elk with them. They aren't spectacular like a high power rifle but they die all the same. I killed one at 184yds with them using open sites on my Remington 700ml.
