Win 70 in .338?

I am going scouting for turkeys and have to drive by the guys place. I am going to stop and see if he is home.

Surreptitiously insinuating myself into the consciousness of those frequenting this forum, I infiltrate the mind to insert the thought that life is not complete without a Winchester. Ah ha! My plan is working.

Mike -
us feeble-minded guys don't have a chance when you start using words like that on us .

Mike, I think everyone will be happier with a Winchester in their safe, and heck two Winchesters or more makes it even better! Scotty

Well I am now the new owner of a Winchester .338 Win Mag. I put some money down on it and the guy said it is mine and when it is paid in full I get to bring it home. It has Leapold bases and the butt stock pad mentioned in one of the earlier post. The cool part is the wife was very supportive of the buy. Something is up there I think.

WT, the wives are ALWAYS going to get something out of the deal. The "what" of it is really up to their imagination!

Great score, I think you are going to like it alot. There are plenty of great starting loads in order to get used to the rifle, that will still be great hunting loads. Get us a picture when you can. It sounds like a good one. Scotty

Wisconsinteacher,

Congratulations. This sounds like a great deal. Scotty is correct, wives always get something out of the deal. I had one rifle that cost well over ten thousand dollars, but the vast majority of that was new carpet throughout the house. Another one cost that much or more, but it included a dining room suite. Yet another was over $35,000 after I paid for major upgrades to the exterior of the house. We have a really nice looking house, thanks to my predilection for Winchester rifles.

I will post pictures when I get the gun. I need to save up $90.00 and I will have it. But I may have to spend it on a new pair of boots. Mine are worthless and full of holes. That is not a good thing for a pair of rubber boots.

I may have to spend it on a new pair of boots.

Boots are highly overrated. As long as you have a good Winchester, you don't need boots.

I spent some time early in my marriage setting up a bit of "credit" with the bank, so to speak. After our tenth anniversary, when I gave my wife a three stone diamond ring, I have had very little trouble running a new rifle into the house periodically as finances and "need" allow. Of course, it doesn't hurt that most of mine have been fairly utilitarian up to this point. In fact, I've only got one rifle/scope combo for which I paid more than $650-700, and that one is worth far more than what I paid for it, for sure.

Of course, my wife has pearls, sapphires, aquamarines, opals, diamonds, sterling silver, white gold, yellow gold...but I'm slowly filling my safe!

I concur with Mike. I would hunt barefoot with a good Winchester! Scotty

Since I'm in the mood to jump in and stir the pot...

If you hunt with a Weatherby, you don't need boots. You just float magically above the ground.

Dude......

I'd rather spend the dough on a good pair of Lowas (or Schnee's).... and hunt with a Marlin/Savage/Wrist Rocket. Those who underestimate the value of boots.... haven't spent enough time away from the truck/atv/tree stand.....

My Priorities:
1. Boots/Outerwear
2. Pack/Gear
3. Optics
4. Rifle/Caliber

Because you're now an angel..... see, your wife killed you when she found out how much dough you spent on a factory rifle!

Songdog,

What can I say? I love my truck!

Oooo! Good one!

These days one can get a good Mark V for not much more than a new Winnie or Remmy...or a Vanguard for a whole lot less!

Well, enjoy the new toy. I have two Winchester M70s in .338 Win. mag. One is a roughly 1968/69 model push feed I got from an old guy out of Salmon Idaho. Sorry to say it wasn't Elmer's. :( Good shooter and recoil ain't all that bad. The second one is a Stainless Classic with a synthetic stock and is one of the most painful and inaccurate rifles I've ever owned. :( It seems for a while Winchester was using McMillan stocks or a darn close clone for their synthetic stocked rifles. This Stainless Classic has a hollow piece of Tupperware scrap for a stock. Looks like a sturdy stock but is about as wiggly as a snake on a hot griddle. Firt class POS. I do have a spare McMillan stock on hand that will need a Pachmeyr Decelerator of Limbsaver installed that I can use but I wonder if it's worth the effort?

I've always thought that all the average hunter ever needed was a good .22 rifle, 30-06 and 12 gauge shotgun. Everything else would be icing on the cake. Sure would be boring though.
I do go along with Col. Whelen though. He said, "The 30-06 is never a mistake."
