A local guy bought a Win 70 and has a question. The manufacture date is 1938 and the barrel is stamped 30 Gov 06. He thinks this is an older military sniper rifle. It is in really nice shape and he paid only $600 for it, so I think he did well.

What does my buddy have in his collection?

Well I doubt it's an old Sniper rifle, but the only way to know for sure is to post pictures. Back in that era everything was stamped .30 Gov 06 to avoid confusion with the .30 US (aka .30-40) before is was shortened up to .30-06 later on. $600 is a great deal on any pre-64 Winchester action.

I have owned 3 .30-06's from the thirties, all Model 70's of that era were stamped; ".30 Gov 06". The sniper rifles from WWII and Korea were almost all M1903-A4 Springfield's.

The only Model 70 sniper rifles that I know of were used in Vietham, prior to Remington winning the contract. I don't know if any were used in Korea or not... Like OT3 stated, most of the bolt action sniper rifles were Springfields.

Still, $600 for a pre-64 Winchester 70 is GREAT.
