WLR vs CCI 200

I have always used WIN WLR primers for my 25-06. I just bought 1,000 CCI primers because, it was there. Will this be a straight substitute or will there be any difference to be noticed? I know it's recommended to start over at the starting load when changing anything, but my current load is the starting retumbo load in the nosler book anyhow. Anyone have experience with both primers?

The CCI's will be "colder" then the winchester primers. You could see a 25-50 fps drop in velocity. Ignition pattern may also be different, so they may not group the same, and may have a different point of impact.

I've seen 12" verticle difference between CCI 200 and Winchester Mag primers in a .270, so I would do a standard workup with your new component.

It is always comforting to do at least one work-up. The differences in pressure/velocity can be surprising. CCI primers are fine quality; I use a lot of them.

well crap. I load noslers almost exclusively, and a 12" vertical drop doesn't sound good to me. i have been thinking about trying some barnes though. i might try and return them. especially since I mostly load retumbo and have read some people use a magnum primer with retumbo.

you know I think i made the switch between FED 215 and CCI 250s in my 300 WBY without even thinking about it! Luckily, there doesn't look to be much of a difference there.

WLR primer are good. CCI's are good too.

Truth be told

Federal, Rem, Win, CCI all make good primers. For most of the shooting public the variance between them is virtually a non issue.

One thing to make note regarding these primers is Winchester primers are the biggest in diameter. If you ever have a loose primer pocket issue and want to salvage the brass and use them, Winchester's can be the saving grace as they are bigger than the other ones.

I have not used CCI in years, it now Federal GM.
You will have to give them a try, your rifle will tell you what it likes.

So while on the subject about primers. Is it possible to load more powder to compensate for the colder primer?

Simple answer, "No."

I use a lot of CCI 200 primers in several non-magnum calibers. I also use WLR and WLP primers when I want a little hotter fire to light up a load. Both primers have given me good service for 50 years.

I've used a lot of CCI-BR2 primers over the last decade, I almost prefer them and just as many Fed GM's. They are actually made by the same company, ATK. Every once in a while the WLRM depending on the case and load. I chase down a load and the last thing I may tweak is the primers if the load is close but not bug holes! Man is that sick or what..... I need to have lower expectations?
