Woo Hoo! LEOSA Qual for 2026 is complete

So what is LEOSA some might wonder? It's the 2004 (later amended) Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act which allows retired cops who qualify with their handguns annually, to carry concealed in all fifty states. It's a great thing. Frankly I wish everyone could legally carry concealed in all 50 states, but this is where we are now. Better than before. One of the ideas behind it was to put more "good guys with guns" out there in the general public. Potentially more folks with the training and ability to stop some violent attack. It was enacted not all that long after 9-11, and I suspect that influenced it.

This year I was apprehensive about it as we're living in a different state and I wasn't sure of the course of fire or how it would be run. Turns out it was a pretty simple and easy course of fire. 25 rounds in four different stages from four different distances. Fair enough. I was one of the few guys shooting a 45, most everyone else had a 9mm of some sort. One fellow I saw used a revolver - looked like it was probably his old duty gun from long ago.



I believe that I had the only perfect score but am not sure of that. Barely managed that as some of my 230 gr FMJ Remington rounds nearly escaped the 10 ring! I used my Springfield Armory Ronin with a Holosun green-dot optic atop it. I've been practicing with that combo and it did well.

Whew! Done with that for another year.

I still do my annual HR218 requalification with my original service gun, a H&K USP 40. That pistol still shoots as good today as it did on day one. Oddly enough, with thousands of rounds down the tube, it's still tight.

I often use my service gun - the 45 Kimber 1911 I bought new in 1997 and carried for the next 17 years putting about 80,000 rounds through it in that time. It still shoots great though it's not as "tight" as it was when new. It was my backup gun for qual today in case the Holosun on my Springfield failed.

I did my qualification last month using my Ronin lightweight 9m. I did the regular 50 round course with the patrolmen. 3 to 25 yards. Weak hand shooting at 3, 15, and 25 yds. Definitely not one of my strengths anymore. I'm good for another year.

Excellent job Guy. Our county PD range just held their LEOSA. I am/was not an LEO but any mention of the qualifying is a reminder to me of a friend who passed 3 years ago that was a retired LEO and the absolute best handgun shooter I know only 1 local game warden is anywhere close. I remember after his last qualifier him being upset because it was the only time he had ever dropped a point in qualifying. He had not long before had his 3rd surgery for detached retina and that being his second on his dominate right eye leaving him with only slight peripheral vision in that eye and he shot the qualifier with his off hand dropping only one shot.
Anyway, again great shooting and thanks for the reminder of my friend and your service to your community.
