I am sorry about all the questions. I am going to take advantage of the cold temps and work on my rifles. I have 3 rifles that I want to get rocking this summer.
The first is my Ruger M77 tang safety. It is a 25-05. It is floated from the recoil lug up to about 2" from the end of the stock. Right now, I am going to leave it alone because it shoots 87 grain bullets under .75". If I decide to try something, I will set it up with a shim near the action to see if it likes being free floated. I don't know if it would ever be worth adding pillars and bedding the action on this rifle.
The second is my Ruger M77 tang safety 30-06. I just got it back from Ruger and it now has a new firing pin spring and ejector spring.
My plan is to free float it and bed the action with pillars. Today I sanded the barrel channel for a while and can not get the pressure off the tip of the forearm. Would it be okay to cheat while bedding the rifle by putting some tape down the barrel so that when I bed it the barrel is free floated? When I put it together with tape on the barrel, it is floated all the way to the recoil lug. I also plan to bed the action from the tang to the front of the recoil lug.
The last is my Win Mod 70 in .338WM. The owner before me bedded from the front of the mag well to 1.5" in front of the recoil lug. The rear action screw also has a pillar but no bedding. I also removed a little wood to make the barrel 100% floated. I have not been able to get a load that makes me smile yet with this rifle. I removed pressure that was more on the side of the stock not the bottom.
I know that some rifles like pressure (Fotis proves that). I hope I am doing the right thing with these rifles. I guess if they want pressure, I can add a little bit back and fine tune it. I also hope to get them all shooting well by this fall.
Any tips or advice?
