Wyoming allows 22's on big game

I know there are some excellent .224 bullets available that hold together and penetrate but the 22 cal center fires are not big game rounds.
IMHO, big game rounds start at .243/6mm and .257 is even better.

I agree however they did limit "big game" animals to antelope with a minimum of 60 gr Bullet in weight.

I can see that restriction. I'm with Jim in my personal opinion on this, however. I know that there are people who use .22 centre fires on deer, and that they do so successfully. I have no doubt they will kill, especially when the shot is placed where it belongs. Still, for hunting here in northern BC, I'm uncomfortable hunting anything larger than a coyote with a .22 calibre centre fire..

Manitoba has the .22 cal as a min as well, I guess the 22.-250 drops deer quite well. The Inuit up north apparently use the .223 quite a bit for caribou and I have heard of them using
on polar bear. Would not be my first choice Lol. One thing for certain many shoot a lower recoil rifle more accurately , ( just a generalization )

I'm often pleased when there is less government interference in a hunter's choice.

Sort of figure that if a guy wants to hunt with his .223 and can make it work, fine. If it doesn't work well, it was his choice, and it's his problem.

Don't expect that I'll be doing much hunting with my .223 AR-15, but I have killed a few deer with one in the past. They work fine, but I'll still stick with the .243 & up as a preference. Especially a certain .25-06 that seems to have become "Ol Reliable" over the past few years.

Well said and +1 from me on this topic.

Here in Oregon as well. .22 min for deer, and .24 min for elk.

I have lots of better choices in my gun safe, but I'd take the old 223 our for a blacktail hunt. In fact, I still have some 60 grn Partitions loaded up. I think they'd do fine to about 100 yards on small deer.

Also, can't wait to try out your new 64 grn bonded protected point 224 bullets!

But ya, I'd probably stick with my .270, 30-30, or 300 wm before I'd take my 223 out for a deer hunt.

I'm not a fan of 22's for deer/antelope size game, but I have used them. I have put two shots through antelope with total penetration rib to rib on both, one at 125 yards and one at 220, with a 22-250 and sierra 55 hpbt gamekings. Antelopes are not very tough. I think that the 64 grain bonded would do excellent.

Here in Saskatchewan smallest is 243cal and I am fine with that. We are noted for having big Whitetail and our Mulies are bigger so I believe in this case the minimum should be no less than the 243cal.
I do not agree with a lot of the gov't. regulations but in this one I do.

Blessings,
Dan

...not my cup o'tea, but it does legitimize the AR platform as a "sporting rifle", kinda wonder if that's what they had in mind...

This is what I was thinking as well.

Maine has a 22WMR minimum for whitetails. No thanks.

I have a 22-250 load with 60gr PTs developed but I can't get myself to use it.

There is no replacement for displacement. Bigger bullets in the right spot just work better.

My dad killed a very large buck, just after the last ice age. Upon processing the meat we found 3, 22 cal, bullets in the bucks hindquarters. All were healed over and cased inside of a fatty mass. I once shot a nice 4 point while chasing coyotes with my 22-250 and a 55 gr. PP. two shots square on the near shoulder, failed to break it. Several miles later, I was able to finish him. I also think there are a lot better choices, especially for Mulies and big Whitetails.

And this is why I do not approve. Not for the people who know how and what to use but for the idiotic nimrods who shoot anything anywhere.
