I usually take one of my nephews out to my stands during Ohio's youth season. The past couple days my oldest nephew kept me company.
Yesterday was a wash, literally and physically. Morning saw nothing, downpours in the evening with snow flurries after dark.
Today was cold. Three walked past before legal hours this morning, then nothing.
Went back mid afternoon to a stand I have in a cut in the woods between two fields. Looks like this:

So we sat a bit. Little breeze but quiet. About a quarter to five I whispered to him, "it's the witching hour" telling him also that now is when things happen. Perked him up a little.
Sure enough, ten minutes later, crunch, crunch right behind us. I was able to look behind us without giving us away, and there was a young buck, walking nose to the ground. Problem was nephew couldn't turn for a shot and as you could see, it's pretty thick other than in the cut or field.
I saw if he continued the way he was my nephew wouldn't be able to shoot other than through a small gap at about 60 yards. I asked him if he wanted the deer and felt comfortable with the shot. He whispered "yup". So we waited forever (really about 45 seconds) and...

20 ga Hornady SST, 68 yards, single shot heavy barrel NEF 20. Nikon 2x7.

Nice :) congrats to your nephew on bagging a nice young buck. Those NEF single shot's will be missed, great guns.

Thank you fellas!
He's a happy young man.
Gerry, I agree, terrific little shotguns. I have the duplicate of that one in 12 ga.

Congratulations to your nephew. When the moment called for it, he was ready. Congratulations to you for taking the time to work with a young man to harvest his venison.
