Or there's this one. My first real "long ranger" (longer than the Daisy anyway) Circa 1975. Put new seals in her this summer. Wont hold a charge quite like it used too, but still makes me smile. Untold thousands of shots and lots of optimism. . ;) (Image should be rotated a 1/4 turn left.)CL

My first specialized rig I traded my Weatherby Mark V in .300 Win Mag for is the new to me Savage 110 Long Range Hunter in .300 Win Mag! It has a 26 inch barrel with a muzzle brake due to my continuous back problems. I needed something that will shoot a little softer for one of the many rounds I like. The other is a Savage 10 Predator Hunter Max-1 in .243 Win. That will handle varmints up to deer for me. The .243 has a 24 inch fluted barrel.

Looks like a couple of tack drivers.

This one made me smile. Brought back some memories.
Very nice Troy.

My first LR rig...
LH Sako AV (apparently built by a gunsmith in New York and sold in a LGS in NE BC)
Fajen nutmeg laminate stock
24" MacLennan SS Fluted barrel
Glass bedded action
I originally mounted a matte Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 scope on it, but then swapped it out for the current VX III 4.5-14 x 40 B&C in Gunmetal Gray , in Leupold rings.
The scoped rifle weighs 8 lbs 7 oz
Shoots the older Federal Premium 160 gr SGK at 3222 fps into 0.75" groups @ 100 yards and 3" groups @ 400 yards
Shoots the newer Federal Premium 160 gr AccuBond also at 3222 into 0.5" groups @ 100 yards and 1" groups @ 300 yards
Has accounted for 30 animals over the past 25 years, from 30 to 475 yards, from antelope to elk
Shoots so well with factory ammo, I haven't tried to handload for this rifle.
7MM STW.JPG

My new LR rig
LH Fierce Carbon Rogue in 7MM PRC w/ 24" barrel
I have mounted a Leupold VX-5HD 3.5-15x44 B&C in Talley lightweight one piece rings and bases
The scoped rifle with a full magazine weighs 7 lbs 14 oz
So far it shoots the Hdy 175 gr ELD-X at 2788 fps into 0.892" groups at 100 yards (slower than expected, but I have found the same results in the 6.5 PRC with the Hdy ELD-X ammo)
I have yet to try the following ammo in this rifle:
  • Federal 170 gr Terminal Ascent
  • Federal 175 gr ELD-X
  • Nosler 175 gr ABLR

Here’s my other rifle that could do yeoman work as a long range rifle or long range hunting rifle is my Savage 10 GXP3 in .300 WSM! This is an exact copy of the first Savage 110 E I had that was in 7mm Rem Mag! It wears a Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40 BDC.

Not sure which I'm loving to see more of.... The SAKO or the Deer head it's holding up! That's a super heavy Rack!

I always loved my SAKO AV, but I ended up selling it 20 years ago to a friend I traded tile work for along w/a Winchester 70 264 Mag. for his wife.

Yes, that mulie is a typical 3x4 with an inside spread of just 22" and gross scored 204 7/8".
I originally arrowed him at what I guesstimated as 40 yards, as the sun was shining through the trees behind him, and due to the sunlight and tree limbs and brush, I could not get an accurate range reading on him. His vitals were clear, but his neck went behind some brush and I could just see part of his head and half his rack past the brush. I knew he was a buck and appeared decent and that was all I needed to take the shot opportunity. The arrow dropped more than expected and I did not see it strike him in the chest so he was obviously a few yards past 40. When he turned to run, the arrow was sticking out of his neck...I assumed that it had been deflected by some brush as it dropped out of my line of sight. I chased him for the rest of the morning, seeing him, but never getting another shot with the bow, or even the rifle as I never got close again. At one point he bedded down on the railroad tracks at about 400 yards, but I could not take the shot, as the convenience store in the small town by the farm was about a mile past him!
It took two days to track him down and finish him with the rifle with a 354 yard shot, with that Sako in the photo. He was still tending a hot doe on the farm, about a 1/2 mile from I originally shot him with the bow. He was still bleeding from the arrow wound in his neck. He wasn't moving too fast, but was keeping the satellite bucks at bay. He dressed out at just under 300 lbs! The broadhead was buried in his spine and missed the carotid artery by 1/8". It took a bone saw and vise grips to remove it from the spine.

You need to get another Sako!

That is such a beautiful set-up!

My long Range rig is a plain jane. My Remington 700 in .338RUM with a 26 inch factory barrel wears a McMillian stock and a 1.5 X 6 Zeiss Scope. The trigger is a Tubbs Custom (2 1/2 lbs). I've shot it with 225 grain Sierras and Partitions out to 600 yards. Average group is 3-4 inches off a rest. This was a 1st year production rifle and the barrel is like glass inside. (don't ask me how that happened). One of the most accurate rifles I own.

These are all GAP Built except for the sand barreled rifle which is a SAC Build switch barrel 260/308.
Left to Right:
Terminus Kratos, Bartlein CF 1:8.7, McMillan A1-3 in 280 AI FMR.
SAC Alpha II 27” Hawk Hill MTU 1:8 Manners in 260, plus a 27” Krieger MTU 1:9 308 Win.
Impact Precision SA, Bartlein 1:7.2,Manners CF Elite, in 6 GT/and a SBR 308.
Thunder Ranch Rifle, Templar action, Bartlein 1:8, Manners in 6.5x47 Lapua.
Deviant Elite, 27” Brux 1:7.5 HV #17, McMillan A-3 in 25x47 Lapua (custom Manson Precision reamer to my own specs).

They all use TT Diamonds, except the TRR which is a modified Remington.

The two on the right are NRL Hunter rifles, far left is my hunting rifle and the other two are for PRS / Long range precision matches.

Very nice collection of rigs you have theređź‘Ť

Here’s how I practice most of the time since it’s unsupported rear and how most shots are taken in a field match, or maybe while hunting and shooting off a tripod with the same bag on top, a log or rock.

280 AI FMR 160 Nosler BT up 1.3 mils/370 yards as shown in the photo.

Since I don’t have a lot of elevation to dial with this setup I hold using the mil-dot reticle and dial in the 10ths. This scope has .05 cm/100 m clicks and only 1.6 total mils to dial…. Which is basically a 1/20 mil click. Hold a mil and dial 6/10ths on the turret. Or just wing it, hold and shoot.
