Completed transition from Alliant to Hodgdon...

. With the unobtainability of any Alliant powders I got off that wagon several years ago. Before the Chinademic I found a place that was getting out of the reloading business.

I bought all the IMR-7828 they had at 14 per pound which turned out to be 10 lbs. Also bought all the H414, and Big Game. The only powder I buy now is a few lbs of Varget. I also "loaded up" on Win primers at 25 dollars per 1000. I bought thousands. I'm set for the rest of my life.

I pity those that are buying primers and powder at today's prices.

Luckily I never developed a load with Alliant powders. Got some RL22 once years ago and never worked up a load for my 257 Weatherby with it. Used it to get a few scopes on paper for n different guns. Mainly use Hodgdon powders in all my guns.

I In the past I have used a lot of Alliant powders mostly, and nowadays I have transitioned to Hodgdon powders the last several years. I only use whatever is left of RL22, RL25 and RL 26 mainly for my 300 Win Mag, as for the RL 17, its just been sitting on the shelf for more than 5 years, never touched it since I have been using Hodgdon for my standard cartridges. I yet have to try RL17 in the 308 sometime, but I don't like heavy powder crunch. I like Hodgdon for a few reasons which are no temp swings, very consistent low ES / SD, and great case fill. I have stocked up with several jugs of Varget, H4831SC, H4350 and H1000. Alliant are great powders as well, but the availability sucks. If I were to find some Alliant, I would grab RL 22 and RL 26.

Fella’s give a look at Vihtavuori powders. Very similar to what we saw with Alliant and man it’s a quality powder that rivals H powders in stability. Mike has used them a lot in the past and as usual, I was slow to get on the trail but if you like 33 you’ll love 570. Same for similar burn rates.
gotta agree with SJB about the n570 my 257 loves it , shot 100 gr bullets excellent ,then loaded some 115 gr partitions in it no change in accuracy!

33, 19 and 10x (6-8# of each) are what i have the most in on alliant as 15, ar-comp, 17, 22 and 25 all have 2# or less left. i'm transitioning into vv powders since my favorite imr4831 is all but gone. probably saving the 17 for 308 and 7-08 and 22 and 25 for i'm not sure which cartridge(s)? 7828ssc is my backup powder for many cartridges which could get me as much as 1k rounds depending on charge. i'm really hoping that 560 will work great in 260rem, 6.5prc, 264wm and 300wm and maybe 243win (565 as backup to that). i've got a fair amount of retumbo and varget. makes me wish i had more time to reload back when everything was available. instead i have 300# of untested powders. that goodness i have an ungodly amount of primers to test with.
VV N160 worked great in my 260 after having accuracy issues with H4350 which has always been the go-to powder for decades.

That said hopefully you’ll have some luck with VV N560, it will reduce the life expectancy of your barrel though.

i've read that about the 500 series powders on being barrel burners regardless of some being less temp sensitive/stable. i do have some 160 & 165 powders to try for my larger magnums and may try some in the 5.6prc & 7saum?

Centerfire rifle.
There was a feller on other forums that went by “Seafire” that devoted a lot time into reduce Blue Dot loading , he since pass last summer.

I like Alliant powders, but really no more than others. That said, Alliant is making all our minds up for us to move away from them. Price aside availability is essentially gone. Luckily I have enough RL powders left to burn the throat out of the respective rifles I load them in. There are only 2 that I’ll miss when gone really.

RL23 and 26. RL23 is truly amazing in my 7mm Rem Mag, and RL26 gives me outstanding velocity and accuracy with E-Tips in my 270 Winchester, at 3200 fps. The velocity RL26 gives in this application, without signs of excess pressure is remarkable. I will say that SB 6.5 comes close enough to it that I don’t think I’ll notice the difference when the time comes but that will be a while.

My go-to's have always been Hodgdon powders with some IMR thrown in. Lately I've had good luck with Ramshot Hunter & LRT. I also have a few pounds of N565 for the 6.5 PRC but haven't played with it yet. I have some R17, R19 & R22 but have hardly touched it. That'll be changing soon though. Winchester's Staball powders have been doing well for me too! Hell, we got more choices than we know what to do with even with the Reloder powders being all but non-existent.

i have 2# of 22 and possibly 2# of 17 if you want them!

i also have 2# of 25 if someone want them!

i haven't done any loads, so it'll be a waste on primers for doing load developments and having a max number of shots of 250.

btw, what are your plans with the lrt cartridge(s) wise? the lrt i have would be for 264wm and 338lm.

Thanks for the offer but I'm good on powders! I've only used LRT in the 7mm PRC and really like it so far. 168gr ABLR at 2900 fps with a 20" barrel, which isn't a max load. It's been pretty easy to find locally too.
