I recovered another ABLR, this time in 7mm from a 7mm PRC. I do an annual hunt trip to Alabama to hunt with one of my best friends at his hunt club. We hit the rut just perfect and we saw tons of rutting activity. Two nice 8 pts were shot earlier in the week and one of the properties target bucks had also been seen, an old 6 pt they call Unibrow. Unibrow was becoming a bit of a legend. He had been shot at four times by three different hunters in the weeks leading up to this. Two of the shots were by a kid and another was by someone who gets the shakes super bad whenever he sees a deer. I was shown pics and videos of Unibrow among others, but liked the old warhorse. He had pretty distinct antlers, heavy big forks.

My very first sit was on a food plot, with pines to my left & a thick creek bottom to my right. The deer were moving! I saw two spikes down in the creek right after daylight. I got to watch one make a rub and then saw a really nice 7 pt in the creek but couldn't get a shot. A little bit later I thought I heard something behind me and to the left. I peered into the pines and saw a deer walking parallel to the food plot. I threw up the binoculars, saw antlers and recognized Unibrow immediately! He was only 60 or so yards away but it was quite thick and he was walking away slightly angling to the food plot. I was hoping he'd come out and I'd get a shot. I already had the gun on him. For whatever reason, he suddenly changed course, took a hard left and started walking away but slightly angling back towards where he came from. I had a good rest and when he got to a small opening, I shot with the buck steeply quartering away. I heard the bullet hit and the buck spun 180 degrees and was facing me but just standing there. With this buck's reputation, I chambered another round and plugged him in the chest and he was down!

The first bullet hit him just in front of his left ham and was found under the skin right behind the offside shoulder. Shot distance was 80ish yards. I didn't recover the 2nd shot because the buck's insides were a mess, but it did not exit. Super impressed with the ABLR's! The first shot penetrated over 24 inches and weighed 108 grains with beautiful expansion. Load was 168gr ABLR blems, Hornady brass, Ramshot LRT and Federal mag primers. Chronoed right at 2900 fps out of the 20" barrel of the X Bolt 2 SPR and TBAC Ultra 7. Overall the group shot six bucks and four does over three days. It was a helluva weekend!

It's funny... A lot of us take short range shots with our long range rifles... :)

Mine was about 20 yards on a 4x4 muley with my 25-06 using a 100 gr bullet at 3340 fps... Ya, instant death. This was almost 20 years ago and I was using a copper hollow point bullet, no lead. I'd set that load up for 300+ yard shots... Nope! There was the buck and I wasn't about to let him go.

So there you are with the ABLR, 7 PRC all set up for probably very long shots... And instead it's at 60 yards! That's great. Makes me smile. Obviously you shot well and the bullet did its deadly job.

Regards, Guy

Ha, you're right, long range cartridge and bullet and a 6-24x50 scope and I shoot the deer under 100 yards. Honestly I don't plan on ever shooting a deer long range, I just like the equipment!

How do you like the Ramshot with the AccuBond? By the way 2,900 in a 20 inch is some good velocity, how does the powder group.

Reminds me of the close range shots I have taken game at with my 7MM STW over the years (160 gr SGKs and ABs):
  • 30 yards, mountain goat
  • 30 yards, whitetail buck
  • 35 yards, whitetail buck
  • 80 yards whitetail buck
  • 60 yards, mulie buck
  • 85 yards, mulie buck
  • 40 yards bull moose
  • 80 yards, bull moose
  • 80 yards, bull moose
  • 90 yards, cow elk
Then there was my first mountain goat, taken at 20 yards with my 7mm Rem Mag, the bull moose at 30 yards and caribou bull at 43 yards with my 6.5 CM, the 2 mulie bucks with the 280 Rem with each at 40 yards, the black bear at 80 yards and bull elk at 70 yards with the 300 WSM, the bull elk at 5 yards and the grizzly at 40 yards with the 338 Win Mag.
Point is: Use what you got in your hands when the opportunity presents itself!

After further reflection, I think this just goes to show that some of us are hunters first! Shooters second.

It shoots great, right around an inch or a little less if I do my part with very little load development. It wasn't a max load, so I could get more velocity but it's working so well I might leave it alone.

As Hannibal used to say "I love it when a plan comes together!"

There are times when we are tempted to push just a little more to get that next level of velocity or accuracy from a load, and that can be part of the adventure in this passion. But there are times too when it worked well enough that we are happy or satisfied with the initial results, and we do not pursue it any further. After all, do we need 1/2 MOA accuracy in a lever action, a pump action, or a semi-auto that is used for short range, dark timber or deep woods hunting?
As I, and others, have stated year over the years, I am happy when I have the expected velocity, but accuracy is more important to me. When I achieve both, I am even happier!

Or when I have a factory load that I tested first in a new rifle to see if it is going to show any preference for a particular bullet, bullet weight, or velocity range, that works so well that I am not really tempted to find a handload for it.
My 7MM STW is one that falls into this category. I am getting accuracy of 1/2" groups with it at 100 yards and 1" groups at 300 yards with one load (Federal Premium 160 gr AccuBond), and 1" at 100 yards, with 3" groups at 400 yards with another load (Federal Premium 160 gr SGK), and both achieving 3222 fps from its 24" barrel. Will I ever do better with a handload?
Luckily for me that I stocked up on both of these factory ammo loads, as they are both discontinued now, that I have enough to last me for a number of years yet, if I do not spend to much time just shooting it just for fun. Annual testing at the range to recheck zero before a hunt, and hit the gongs out to 450 yards, yes. When I do get low, I will have to develop a load with the 160 gr AccuBond, but that will be a while off yet...and I have other rifles that I can use too.
