33 WCF, Questions

Had a strange misfire with the gun. After about 35 rounds he got a bullet stuck. We got it out with liquid wrench, brass rod and hammer. The primer fired, the powder did not and a plug of yellow colored powder was in the neck covering the rest of the powder. Powder was w748, primer CCI large rifle.

Ideas?

As this was put together at the "Husband in law"s house, we didn't tumble the bullets and I am wondering if the RCBS liquid lube was left in the brass and effected things?

The 33 Winchester has a bullet diameter of .338, so there are some good choices out there. Two options that you might look at are the 200 grain jacketed flat points from Hawk or the 200 grain .338/.33 Winchester bullets from Rim Rock. I helped a neighbor, has passed now, form brass from 45-70 and load. We loaded 200 grain bullets with IMR-3031 and I know that he shot several deer with that combination. The rifle has since pasted to a son, who has also taken at least one deer with it. He had sent me a text message that included a picture of it.

My friend inherited an old lever action in 33 Winchester. The logistics of making some cartridges for it is complex.

Assuming the tubular mag rifle is used as a two shooter, what pointy bullets would work? Hornady SST 200 grain is available. Some Cast bullets with flat nose are also. Any insights in how well these might work?

Have to either buy brass at $3+ each or make from 45-70. I have found 45-70 brass for sale.
The sizing, seating dies are scarce but I found a couple of sources. The dies for forming have been discontinued, anyone know of a source?
How likely will we be able to neck down using the sizing die only? Any modern dies that would be used for an intermediary step?

Anyone have modern load data? The stuff I have is from Phil Sharp and PO Ackley.
Does Quickload have 33 Winchester?
I use 24 grains of 4198, and have 300 rounds of loaded Jamison proper head stamp. I use Hawk 338 RNFP or Hornady 338 FTX, suitable for tubular magazines. Call if you need any more info. or ammo--Bill

WOW! Very cool cartirdge ideed. I have been fascinated by the 33 WCF since I was a boy and had a sample in my cartridge collection. Owned a 348 WCF, but never a 33. Great project and I bet it;s fun to shoot.
