[1100 Remington Man]

Refinishing Stock on a Remington 58. I took the old finish off by sanding with 100,150,220,400,800,1200,2000 grit Sandpaper. I then applied Oil Finish from Pro Shooting Stock Conditioner, this is the Product Cole’s Guns in Naples gave Me for my Beretta 694 and I liked its finished so this is what I used. I just applied a couple drops a side and rubbed it in by hand. Now I have to change the Safety from Left hand to a right hand safety and have a New Recoil Pad installed. Then it should be good for another 65 years.

This is a 1974 vintage Remington 700 BDL that I sanded down and hand-rubbed 7 coats of Tru-Oil onto the stock. At first it had a dull sheen to it, but with more handling and time it developed into this. I refinished it about 1990 - and this photo was just from a couple of years ago. Put a better recoil pad on it too when my skinny kid was shooting it and not doing well with the hard plastic buttplate in his bony shoulder. I think the Tru-Oil helped bring out the grain.

Yes I did just tape over to protect it and I put a couple drops to the stock conditioner on a soft toothbrush and applied it to checkering. This did not take 6 hours start to finish.

I really like tru oil as well.
I use it for my knife handles. It really does bring out the grain, and it really seals the wood very well protecting it.
And it lasts.
I had a friend who asked to help refinish his Grandfather’s rifle. Apparently he fell while hunting with it and broke the butt stock.
So he purchased a new butt stock and I refinished the butt stock and the original forearm so that they would match, and sealed them with Tru oil.
The checkering was a challenge, but it came out okay.
I used to use a tung oil type finish, but it did seem to hold up as well, and was a little more difficult to get where I wanted it.
