Hey Nosler, what is the availability on the new Nosler Solids?
I saw the new ad in the SCI Awards issue.
What are the bore sizes and weights?
thanks...jim
I drew a Montana deer/elk combo license earlier, just waiting now to see which side of the Bitterroot Valley I get for the deer tag. I also drew an Oregon high Cascade buck tag last week, and a Colorado mule deer tag in area 41 near to Grand Junction.
I wanted to hunt in Alberta as well, but...
Ah so, I would suspect -- without trying it -- that 1100 to 1200 yards would be a bit much for the GS. I shot a lot at 1,000 yds with my .30-.338 and a 20X Redfield, but that was all target work on a square range.
I have shot to 2,000 meters with a .50 BMG and a 10X Weaver K10 (of all things)...
The Pentax Gameseeker might be a bit short for eye relief for your .300 WM. I just got a Pentax Lightseeker SL for my .300 RCM, and I like their LS line of scopes.
How long is long range for you?

I had my NULA M24 built with a No. 2 contour stainless barrel; the finished rifle is 5.5#. If you are looking to trudge mountains, I would go with the thin barrel. My Douglas barrel does not show any weirdness when shooting, and the rifle definitely packs light.

If your friend practiced with a .458, his .340 would not feel so bad!
Seriously, a lot of the recoil effect is between your ears, and if you learn how to manage it you will be able to shoot a medium like the .340 very well.
The comment about using 200 gr or 210 gr bullets is on the mark too. I...
I have been thinking where Nosler should go with their next caliber choice, and I think they should consider the .375 Ruger.
You can use it in North America and Africa, and it fits in standard length actions.
I life my Ruger African, but a higher scale rifle would be really good.

jmad 81,
Whenever light comes up in rifles I think about Mel Forbes and his NULA rifles. My M24 .30-'06 has a 24" stainless barrel in number two contour, and it goes 5-3/4 lbs without the scope.
It is great for carrying up and down those hills, and I intend to mount a Swarovski this year.

I would think the .30-'06 would have to be a choice pretty soon. When I ordered my most recent custom rifle that is the cartridge I chose (a NULA M24). The old '06 still carries the mail for the rifle numbers game.
The NULA shoots the Nosler Custom Ammunition really well, so I expect that would...
There *is* a lot of chatter on the Intenet, but translating that into rifle sales seems tough. You can look at where the 6.5X55 and .35 Whelen have been chambered, and they just limp along.
Die sales are not that high either.
jim
RR,
Are you shooting sabots? If so, I see a lot of choices in the market.
I usually shoot conicals in my ULA or White rifles, and that is problematic. Lead slugs up at pretty low pressure levels, while Ty at Barnes told me their testing showed 40,000 psi was needed to force copper to slug up...
Also if the area is Forest Service or BLM managed I like to get the agency's map. They show boundaries and ownership details that may not be on other maps.

The smoother barrel should be good for more accurate rounds between cleanings. Whether that makes a difference or not is up to you. The worst barrel I have tried looked like a copper mine after three shots, so I had it lapped and reactive hardened. I could not tell the difference in accuracy...
One thing is doing it over with more current powders to get a more temperature insensitive load for hunting. That ought to keep you busy on your hunting rifles. ;)
Have you looked at Hodgdon's Hybrid 100V yet?
