I’ve experienced almost exactly what you’re going through, and it came down to using a VLD chamfering tool and doing more than just “touching” the case. When I put a good smooth chanmfer on the case mouth my concentricity got very consistent.
The two best powders I've found in a couple different 223's with lighter bullets are TAC and the newer IMR 4166. Both scoot 50 grainers out pretty quick with very good accuracy. They both are temp stable and have copper fouling inhibitors so they help keep your bore pretty clean. 4166 has kinda...
I've had one for a couple years now replacing a Rock Chucker, and I've loved everything about it. Solid press, loads easily, and most importantly delivers consistent, concentric ammo.
I've had exceptional luck with 46gr of RL-17 and 140 NBT's in several of the 7-08's I load for. In fact I have yet to have a rifle not like the load. It's always been a case of fine tuning the COAL then letting her fly.
My favorite rifle for the last decade or more has been a Sako 75 FinLite in 7mm-08. It's been shot by far more than any of my other rifles with the exception of rimfires.
I have a Tikka 6.5x55 that's been starting to get the nod more and more. It got hunted more last fall than any other. We'll...
I've not seen a consistent correlation between low ES/SD's and great accuracy. The only real benefit I see for super low ES/SD's is less vertical dispersion at long range. Most hunting loads are never shot at long enough ranges to ever benefit from them. I would pick the good accuracy loads at...
I generally have 1 load per rifle, and I keep 50-100 rounds loaded and ready to roll for each. That way I have a choice when I go hunting on which rifle combo would work best for the intended circumstances.
With that said, I'm a consummate tinkerer. I like trying new things, and have tendency...
Pharm, I'd love to hear how those shoot. I've got 500 of them I'm going to use in one of my AR's but haven't started load development yet. I've got lots of both Varget and TAC, so either would work.
I also ordered 500 from SPS. Already have them loaded with both RL-17 & H4350 in my Creedmoor. Now just need a non-rainy day to head for the range. Today might be the day...
I've worked in the outdoor/shooting sports industry for 26 years, and I have to admit that I've gone through many iterations of why I buy different rifles. At first, because of economic considerations, I bought rifles with pretty specific duties. My first 25-06 was purchased because I needed a...
Any bullet striking bone is going to cause meat damage. When bone is encountered, the bone fragments themselves become ballistic objects creating their own wound channels and blood shot. The 180's moving slower will lessen this to some extent, but will still create a bit of a mess. Don't expect...
Nosler Ballistic Tips for both loads. Thanks!
Also, how much do you find yourself using Quickload? I've been contemplating buying it for just this type of project. It seems it would be nice to be able to corolate pressures to my chronographed speeds.
So you know I'm not doing something crazy... Just bought a new to me 700 Classic in 300 Savage. All the data out there is for the older guns with weaker actions like the Savage 99's. Would like to at least be able to get a little out of the smart little cartridges.
My hunting partner and I killed 3 deer last year with 200g ELD-X's shot from a 20" suppressed 308. This was a whitetail hunt in Northern Idaho where shots are typically not very long. All three deer were killed between 50-80 yards. Impact velocities were probably around 2300-2400fps. While all...
The Partition is probably the best choice, but with that said any of the bullets you listed would absolutely work at the modest speeds the 7-08 launches them at. The Ballistic Tip has such a thick rear jacket that I would be surprised if it didn't maintain 50-60% of its weight, which is only...
I hear what you're saying on the Tikka mags, but on the other hand my experience with Accubonds is they don't mind a jump. I often start them at .050 off even when I have a magazine where they could be seated farther out.
