Congrats Guy & Fotis!
My son will be 12 in Sept and he accompanied me in '10 when I shot our first pronghorn buck. This year a buddy from church and I entered our pointless boys in the buck tag draw and they got their first choice!
We'll be staying in Douglas Oct 5-8, hunt the 6-8, and then...
Man that is one wild a$$ bullet!
Sorry couldn't resist :) !
Thanks for posting! Looks like you got a whole lotta meat there!
Wow there is a lot of shank back there to drive that drill right through. What was the shot angle? Muzzle velocity? Retained weight?
Thanks for posting! Very cool!
I don't know about that.
How many of us have grandpa's old rifle?
Hopefully those gunsmiths who have .280 Rem Ackley Improved reamers will continue to Mark barrels as such, and those with the SAAMI standard .280 AI will do the same.
PM me your email address and I'll send you what they sent me. Unfortunately they didn't include anything for Magnum <170 gr bullets. They did send me Hunter data for the whole gambit of 7mm offerings bullet-wise.
I've made a habit of kissing first then working my way back from there, assuming they'll cycle thru the mag.
In my experience the problem w/ starting some distance away is then I can't tell what direction to go if it doesn't work. Again, assuming a kiss will cycle. If a kiss won't cycle I'll...
Which press do you have?
I bought the Lee Anniversary Kit when I first started reloading assuming I'd have to upgrade, but haven't had to replace the press. Other parts of the kit (scale, measure, etc) I've upgraded but not seen need to replace press itself.
Now the toggle down where the...
I LOVE Hunter but from what John Barsness has said it's somewhat temp sensitive. The way I've addressed that in my loading is to try and develop loads that aren't hot, and to do so in warmer weather. Haven't done a ton of shooting of those loads in really hot weather either, but even the most...
From what I've seen RLs -19 & -22 are about the same with regards to temp issues.
No idea where 7828 ranks in that sense.
This thread is quite helpful; thanks Mike for that posting. Would you be willing to do that same calculation with the 168 gr Custom Comp? I am playing with that one...
There are pretty few cartridges RL15 DOESN'T do well in!
I call it "magic pixie dust"!
Let's see... I've had 223s, 6-250, 243, 257 Bob, 257 AI, 257 Weatherby, 7-08, 7x57, 280 AI, 30-30, 30-06, and 338-06. The only two in which RL15 was not an absolute STAR in were the Bee & the 280 AI.
Ya...
Don't overlook the 185 gr TTSX pushed north of 3k by RL15! That's enough for anything in NA, but great for whitetails too!
I blew through a big doe w/ a 180 NBT & RL15. They're great whitetail bullets if you can find em.
For "all around" use I settled on the 200 gr Combined Tech Ballistic...
Head over to the 24hr campfire to gain a more encouraging perspective!
I have a standard & Better Bob & my son has a standard in the works that he may well end up taking to Wyoming for pronghorn this October. I still feel an insatiable urge for an 84M Select chambered to da Bob!
If that ends...
56 gr IMR-4350 & 165 gr Interlock. Don't know speed but honest one-hole groups in my 96 American & more than enough for anything in lower 48.
59 gr IMR-4350 & 150 gr BTSP Interlock. Fast, tough bullet & great accuracy.
The 168s are a real favorite of mine; nice thick jacket and fantastic BC.
I experimented w/ Hunter, 165 SSTs, RP cases, and WLRMs early on & exceeded 3k fps but primers were flat & accuracy was lacking. Once I backed off a couple of grains & switched to the 168 NBT (which has a shorter bearing...
Hunter is an absolute favorite of mine. I haven't done a ton of chrono testing to note the issues you do, but John Barsness has said that it is not one of the most temp stable propellants out there. The challenge, as AI am sure you know, is that ball powders do their best at the top end of the...
My first two choices after the 4350s would be RS-Hunter (I LOVE this stuff as much as many guys love H-4350) and RL-19. On the faster side I'd consider testing RL-15.
I hate to tell you, but you may be best off trading out projectiles to 165/8 NBT or 165 Interlock. If yer 06 won't shoot a 165...
For your dad's rifle consider my experience:

...and if kiss'll function thru his rifle give it a try; you'd want to drop charges back a tad & work back up though. Has RL19 worked well through his rifle in the past? You might consider a slower powder like RL22 or...
I completely agree Steve. I always fire form before attempting load work-up, and have killed a bunch of stuff with fire forming loads.
Never done the COW method because I like shooting just to shoot, but if I had a rifle for which I was concerned about wear I would certainly look into it...
