Brian,
I’ll be the outlier here and say that I’d go with the lighter & faster bullet. I too hunt where there’s a lot of brush and have pretty well settled on 120 gr. bullets whether in my 7mm-08 or 6.5 Creedmoor for deer hunting here. I like the bit of additional speed and have found that I...
Thanks to all for taking the time to reply. I unfortunately did not get a chance to field test the 100 gr Ballistic Tip out of my Grendel last season though I was ready and planning to do so deer did not cooperate.
fwood I have to echo the comment about the fine buck your daughter took...
Hi,
I’ve been on the forum for years though never posted before now. I’m a person who has had great success with Nosler bullets in particular Ballistic Tips on white tailed deer here in Mississippi.
I’ve got a new rifle CZ527 in 6.5 Grendel and want to use it with 100 gr. Ballistic Tips for...

Hi, purchased a copy today only to find it will not download to my iPad using Safari.
Anyone else encountered this & worked out a clean way to get it to iPad?
I planned to put it into iBooks on my iPad so it would be conveniently available.
Thanks in advance
I've had/used both the Ruger SBH & Smith and Wesson 629. Currently I have a 5" bbl 629 and like it far better than my Rugers.
I can't speak to the other revolvers mentioned as I haven't owned/used them.
Given the choice again - I'd get another 629. If you haven't tried out a 5" barrel, I...
I'm regularly asked by folks new to the deer hunting game here in MS what I'd recommend and I always say 308 to those who don't reload.
It's accurate, recoil isn't bad and you can get ammo everywhere here for it....and let's face it, a deer isn't that hard to kill !!!
I've used the 180 gr Ballistic Tip in a 338-06 and taken some does at distances of ~ 40 - 50 yards. Shoulder shot - blew out a piece of lung the size of your palm and left a blood trail like you were pouring it out of a pitcher It did blow through both shoulders and did not blood shot as much...
He has not lost a single deer using this bullet - and some of his shots have not been pretty !!!
Most drop in their tracks or in a step or so - majority DRT.
The furthest one has gone, he hit one too far back year before last (gut shot) and it made 40 yards.
He loves this bullet & load for...
I have a S&W 629 and tried several grips to take some of the sting out of recoil with heavier bullets/loads.
The most comfortable I've found (and I like to quite s lot) was an older design made of wood rather than rubber.
That is the Classic made by Eagle Grips - it is smooth rosewood with a...
Based upon the rapid expansion my friend gets with that bullet on relatively small southern whitetails, I'd put 4 in a row and expect it to get into the 2nd, maybe 3rd jug.
Let me know what it does for you, as I'm curious. Of the 50 or so deer he's shot with it, he's only had one exit on a...
The 7mm 120 gr Ballistic Tip is very popular for deer hunting among those who've tried it.
I'm switching to it this season for use in my own 7mm-08 after getting a number of positive recommendations on it from folks who've used it for that purpose.
I'd say give it a try, I plan to.
I like both Varget and RL-15 in my 7mm-08.
Varget tends to get the nod as I use it in most everything.
I get good accuracy with both, however, so it's all in what you like.
Hi,
I don't use these myself, but load for two friends that I hunt with who use them extensively.
The first uses them in a 30-06 at ~ 3200 fps, and in a BLR 308 at 3000+ fps. Deer are DRT - blood shots more meat than I care for at close impact ranges & high impact velocity, but IT WORKS...
I have and use a Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm scope with the wide duplex reticle. I hunt in Wilkinson & Amite counties in Mississippi.
Hunting in the woods the other evening, in heavy cover, on the ground I could still clearly identify the target and see to shoot through my scope @ 5:30 PM .
How...
I hope it makes a go of it. I think it is an excellent development - wish it had happened sooner.
I currently have an early BLR in 358 Winchester. I'd really prefer the gun in the new 338 Federal as I like the selection of rifle bullets available in 338 caliber better than those readily...
Here is South West Mississippi (a lof feral hogs here), our best way is either with live traps or dogs.... Hogs are extremely wary, typically nocturnal here and much harder to still/stand hunt than deer. I'd suggest bait.
I can also recommend Varget and RL-15. I've had better success with Varget in the 30-06, but RL-15 did work well, just not quite as clean in my application.
I favor the 140 grain Nosler Solid Base for the 7mm-08. I used in for years in my 280 Remington before it was discontinued. Unfortunately, the 280 Remington and other rifles went up in smoke with a home fire.
Now that I'm shooting a 7mm-08 and the Nosler Solid Base is available again, I think...
