104 lb coyote is a big dog. I wonder if it is a red wolf?

DNA says it is a coyote

A combination of genetics and food can make for some large animals, just as genetics and minerals can produce some amazing racks on ungulates. The average weight of some Asian cultures has grown by significant amounts in a few generations as result of increased availability of food and as the quality of that food is changed.

Even still Mike, I think it is a wolf! I know it "could" happen, but man, that thing looks like a wolf! I have seen some large yotes and not saying it couldn't be, but I would bet the DNR is saying coyote just to keep the wolf lovers out of their hair. Sorry, I am a pessimist when it comes to the wolf deal. There are plenty of them in the states just North of Missouri. Granted, it could have been a coyote-wolf breed, but it is still wolf nonetheless.

NY does the same thing, there are pictures of mt lions and such all over, the DNR keeps saying they are BOBCATS!!! Come on, that is crazy. I wonder what they are trying to hide? Scotty

Interesting about 2 things.

A wolf killed by a bowhunter in 2001 that came from Michigan (guessing the U.P). Wonder if it trotted down via Wisconsin or caught a ride over the Mac bridge?

Also, Michigan's DNR traded some turkeys to Minn. for some wolves. They did not all just come on over for the scenery. A good buddy of mine is a retired teacher and had a DNR officer talk to his class some years back and he said it was a trade. Funny the current DNR does not want to admit that.

I'm inclined to agree with you. If it were a coyote, it would be three times the average size. back in the laate 1970's when I lived in Northern Nevada, I hunted coyotes for their hides when they were worth serious money. Prime pelts were going for $100 a piece. The biggest yote I killed weighed right at 40 pounds and he as huge.
I too think it is a wolf or possibly a wolf/coyote hybrid.

Me thinks that it is a Wolf, heres why. Missouri for sure does not want to acknowledge the presense of Wolves in the state, tremendous problems associated with that!
The largest Coyote to this date ever killed was 74 popunds. I have looked at 30 pictures of eastern Coyotes in the last hour they all had the light colored buff colored ears this one did not. Coyotes have fairly thin noses for their head size, this one has a very odd coloration for a coyote.
Would have liked to have seen the feet. Oh well!!!!!!!!!!! As long as they stay out of Missouri
