Working on some loads for my new Weatherby Vanguard Stainless in 270 WIN. Ballistic Tips have always been my "go to" bullet for accuracy! 55 grains H4831sc, CCI BR 2 primers. this load is not real speedy, but it's a good starting point! .287 3 shot at 100 yards

And that is bragging size. Great shooting, Scott. It would do for deer.

Welcome to the forum, glad you are here.

That is some fine shooting for sure. Way to go.

With 55.0 gr H4831 and a 150 gr bullet, I get 2830 fps and good groups from my Sav 110 with a 22 in barrel. So using a 130 gr bullet, you are likely getting over 2900 fps out of your Vanguard. Plenty fast enough for whitetails.

Great group by the way!

Good hunting.

Thanks for the comments, The Nosler manual shows a little over 2900 fps! I would like a little more speed, but accuracy is more important to me! The last deer I shot with a factory load was a mule deer in Wyoming over 20 years ago! a 6.5X55 Federal 140 grain Partition at 389 yards, I later chronographed that load at 2475 fps (that deer didn't know that the bullet was going so slow!) My range time will shut down soon, we will start getting our famous Wisconsin weather later in the week! Happy Shooting! Mike aka mulieman

I beleive that Jack O'Connor's favorite load was 60 grs H4831 with a 130 gr bullet so you do have a little room to increase slowly and carefully. Considering that the old manuals in Jack's time were probably a little overpressure, you may not get up to 60 grains but you should be able to go up a grain at a time for 2-3 grains and see if your group size opens up.

Do you have a chrono? If not, I highly suggest that you get one.

The Hodgdon 2011 manual gives 60 grs H-4831 as the max load. It used to be the load listed on the Hodgdon H-4831 plastic can for the 270 win with 130 gr bullets. I have used this load for years in different rifles and it shoots bug holes at 100 yards with 130 Nosler BT or Sierra SP and gets any where between 3000 and 3150 fps depending on barrel and length. It will bang flop a deer.

I've been using the long discontinued Winchester magnum Rifle powder (WMR) in my .270 with the 150 gr. Sierra Game King and as I recently got into 6 boxes of 150 gr. Nosler Partitions for $10 a box I'll be trying them out as soon as it gets hot around here. I do my load work ups in the heat of Tucson's summers as pressure shows up a bit sooner and any load that's safe at 110 in the shade shouldn't be a problem during hunting season. it's worked for me for over 30 years now.
The Game King load does 2930 FPS with no apparent pressure signs and as long as I do my part groups run right around .75". Too bad "Big W" dropped that powder. It's great in my .270 and in my .300 Win. mag.
I also snagged 5 boxes of 150 gr. Nosler Partitions in 7MM so my 7x57 will also be getting some load work up time. I like W760 in the 7x57, good velocity and excellent accuracy.

I wouldn't care if the velocity was 2700fps. Tremendous indeed!

Winchester Model 70 (restocked) Pre-64 130 CT Silvertip on 55.0 grains of IMR 4350 powder and BR2 primer. This is a pretty typical group for this rifle for me since 1973 with either CT Silvertips or Partitions.

i do. a 130 at 2,700 is in the 7mm-08 range. velocity AND accuracy yeilds flat trajectories and more killing power on game.

Too cold and snowy here is Wisconsin to drag the chronograph out! Nosler manual shows a little over 2900 FPS. Oldtrader, I used to shoot 130 Silver tips years ago! they were a good bullet!
A gun shop near me still has a pile of them in bulk, $25.00 a hundred. I might try them out!
Great group!

Are you refering to the old Winchester Silver Tip and not the Nosler CT Ballistic Silver Tip? That was always a good bullet and at a darn good price too.
If I am not mistaken, Jack O'Conner used the 130 gr Silver Tip on elk but his favorite bullet was the Winchester Open Point Expanding bullet.

You have an address or POC to this shop? I wouldn't mind having some of the old school Silvertips to put on the shelf.. I always loved the look of the Winchester Silvertips.
