165 Accubond with the 30-06

I'm considering messing around with the 165 AccuBond in my 06. The rifle is a Rem 700 with 22" barrel. I use win 748 powder with the current 150 AB Load.
Could use some dialog on experiences with the 165, some powder recommendations etc. Would it be possible to see 2800 fps with a 22" barrel?

Thanks for helping,
Don

Howdy Don. I generally shoot 165's from my .30-06, which has only a 21" barrel. Stubby thing, but it handles well and shoots fine.

My go-to powder for a long time now has been H4350, and with a middling load I get 2750 fps, no problem and good accuracy. That's using standard CCI large rifle primers & Winchester cases. With a dab more powder I'm sure I could get it to 2800 fps, but it reaches out so nice at 300 yards now that I likely won't change the load. My son used the good old Nosler 165 Solid Base bullet to smack a bear at 150 yards in September. It worked well. A 165 Partition or AccuBond would have worked even better.

It's true that we put a couple more shots in that bear to stop it from running into a deep, brush-choked ravine, but the first hit through the lungs with the 165 Nosler would have killed it just fine.

Check the H4350 data for the .30-06 on Hodgdon's loading site - they show a max load of 59 grains and 2938 fps - from a 24" barrel I believe.

DON,

My Featherweight sports a 22 inch barrel, and I see any number of loads that go 2900 fps. So, yes, 2800 fps is doable. I have not yet loaded 165 ABs in my rifle, but I have loaded 165 grain Hornady InterBonds, 165 grain Hornady GMX and 165 grain Sierras, using both H4350 and IMR 4831 to achieve sub-MOA accuracy and 2900 fps velocities. I have been working with the 168 grain E-Tip more recently, but velocities were somewhat low in my initial tests. This bullet will receive further inspection this winter.

I am using them right now in my .30-06 with RL17. I am getting pretty much bang on 2900 fps in a 24 inch barrel. Will be trying it with the E-tips as well.

Don-
I shoot nothing but 165 gr. Accubonds or Partitions in my 30-06 which is a Ruger #1B with a 26" barrel. My load chronographs at 2940 fps, but again that's a 26" barrel.

IMR4350 57.4-grs. Federal 210 primer, Winchester cases. That same load worked in the 30-06 I had prior to this one and both shoot them very well indeed. IMR4350 or H4350 would work quite nicely.

Thanks for the input. I commented on a Post (see AccuBond Troubling Performance Pg. 2) about my experience with 150 Accubonds. I feel I need to change to the 150 Partition or Bump up to the 165 AccuBond, either way just a little more stouter bullet would give me more of the performance I'm looking for.

I have a recipe already for the 150 Partitions that would be an easy change, but may elect to give the 165's a go too. Seems to me a little velocity reduction and a increase in bullet weight would work pretty good as well. By the way Guy, what an awesome Bear your son shot, love the color phase too!!

Thanks guys,
Don

Hey Don , i shoot a Rem.700 BDL LH. This rifle likes 168 gr. A-Max With Varget as the powder and WLR primers . More than happy with this combo.

Danny,

Welcome aboard. The A-Max can be a very accurate bullet. Have you tried the Ballistic Tip?

Thanks for the comments. I'm trying the lateral move to the 150 Partition first. Just got some loaded up. Will follow up with the 165's later.

Don

Don, a max load of 4350 behind a 165gr bullet us usually a good performer. I've used it in several rifles, and usually get a velocity right at 2950 fps. With a quality bullet like the PT or AB, you have a good versitile load.

I see your a Denver Man! I moved from Loveland to Tennessee 3.5 yrs. ago. Sure do miss it there. Anyway, what length is the barrel with those velocities?

Don

Don, My standard load for a 30/06 with a 165 gr bullet, 58.5-58.8grs IMR-4350, WLR or Fed 210M. I have shot that load in at least a dozen different 30/06s. That load has taken a moose, Elk, Mulies/whitetails and hogs.Rick.

Thanks Rick,
Sounds like a good load to me, certainly worthy of exploring. :)

Don

Antelope Sniper,
Is your barrel 22", or longer with that velocity?

Rick Smith,
What velocities are you experiencing with your 165 grain load? What bullet brand are you using?

Thank-you,
Don

I have six 30/06s, really like that caliber. 2830-2900 depending on the rifle. I use the 165gr Partition, 165gr AccuBond, 168gr Berger hunting VLD and the Sierra 165gr BTHP Gameking. That load is normally outstanding.Rick.

I have some 165 Ballistic Tips coming soon. Need to get some powder to load some when I can. Figured I'd try the Ballistic Tips first, since they are less expensive than the Accubonds for load development, then switch to Accubonds later if needed.

Don

As others have stated your proposed velocities are within reach. I am running the 165gr Accubonds with H4350 at around 2850 and have been very pleased with the results. This combination has proved to be consistantly very accurate and a very good an reliable performer on game. It is my new golden standard in the 30-06 replacing the 165gr Innerlock(which is saying a lot for me after over 20+ years of reliable service). :)

I have used the 165 AB in a model 700 30-06 for my grandson's first rifle, he took his first elk with it in fine fashion (raghorn bull). He also took his first buck in 2010 with this load and 165 Ballistic Tips. The load is 165 AB/ 58 grains of IMR 4350 and it shoots well under inch groups. My model 70 featherweight in ought 6 also shoots the load amazingly well. From my experience this would be my go to load in any 30-06 for starters! I have used the big magnums for years, but now wonder why with such good combinations in the smaller, lighter, easy shooting guns.

The US adopted what turned out to be one of the most versatile rounds imaginable when they adopted the 30-06 (30-03 at first). Undoubtedly, it can handle 90% of all game requirements encountered on the planet. In the hands of a rifleman, it is an excellent cartridge. An individual restricted to but one rifle could do much worse than to own a 30-06. With the 165 grain AB, it will undoubtedly accomplish all that most owners could ever ask of their rifle.
