With the way the ammo craziness is, my brother has decided to join me in the reloading room. He has a Tikka 30-06 and he wants to get a dual elk / deer load cooked up with the 180 gr Partition. I have never loaded that heavy with the 06. Any suggestions on powder selection or other general advice when loading bigger pills in the 30-06? Right now we are looking at trying IMR 4451, Hybrid 100v and H4350.

The charge of 57 grs of H4350 will do you well. It usually gets around 2770 fps. That's good enough for anything on this continent.
StaBall 6.5, and RL-26 works well too.

But you can't go wrong with the above load.

I've never gotten top speed out of Hybrid 100V, but the SD/ES numbers are single digits and accuracy is phenomenal.

When I started with the 30-06 12 years ago, it was with the 180 gr NP and H4350.
I do not remember the charge weight, but it worked just fine.

. I have RL17 , so if I were going to load this bullet in a 30.06 , I'd be trying RL17 first . it gives good case fill and top velocities . when looking at case fill % and velocities , ramshot hunter , win 760/ H414 , H4350 , IMR4451 would be other powders that look like they would be worth a try .

H100v is going to be compressed at mid through max loads .
RL26 , you can't get enough in the case to bring pressures up .

IMR4350 or H4350 is what I what suggest using first with 180 gr. Partitions. I would also highly suggest trying the 180 gr. AccuBond. It too is an incredible bullet.

I don't really see the need for the 180 for a deer/elk load although it certainly will work superbly. I load the 165 gr. AccuBond or Partition in my 30-06 and that is all I have ever used for coyotes, deer, antelope, elk, and black bear in that rifle. I really like the 165 gr. weight in the 30-06.

IMR4350 is what I use with the 165 gr. bullet also.

6mm I agree about the 165 gr in the 30-06. I am no expert but I believe it is the perfect bullet weight for the 06. I have a load cooked up with 165 gr BTips and IMR 4451 that will go 2925 with single digit SD and shoots sub-moa. I love the 165's.

Yeah, I switched to the 165 AB after the 180 NP and well - it worked.
Had to go lead free then, but if I would go back to lead, it would be the AB. But that was not the question here...

I've seen from other posters on the forum that the 165 gr AB's and the performance they provide on game from coyotes to elk. They are super accurate. They punch through everything, and knock game down quickly.

a max charge of RL23 is 62.7 gr , 115.1% case fill .
a max charge of RL26 is 65.5 gr , 109.4% case fill .

I like to keep case fill at or under 105% .

you can see in the chart below a max charge of RL17 is 98.7% case fill , it reaches the max pressure of 60000psi , it gives good velocity , and it's 100% powder burnt . this is why it would be my first choice to try

here is a quickload powder chart for the 180 Partition . quickload has the 30.06 at 60000psi max pressure . I set the chart up for 60000psi max and a max case fill of 105% . I don't like to work with case fills much over 105% . heavily compressed loads cause other problems . I feel it's better to choose another powder that fits the combo better .

after giving this a second look , I'd work with this powder . it's not as compressed as I previously thought .

in my opinion I ran this one to show why it's not a good powder choice for this combo .

max pressure load 115 % , velocity at max psi 2829 FPS , 100% powder burnt

when the case fill % is lowered to a more workable fill of 106% it doesn't reach max pressure at 106% case fill . it gives 2585 FPS , 44585 psi , 98.9% power burn . usually low pressure powder charges burn dirty . I'd also be concerned with how consistent powder burn would be .
