Got out to the range this morning for a bit with the .375 H&H. Goal was to sight in the old Redfield 2-7x, get familiar with the rifle, and run some ammo across the chronograph. Accomplished all three, still smiling, and shoulder is still intact. Recoil of the .375 had been described to me as more of a "big push" and I have to agree with that. The nice Pachmayer Decelerator recoil pad undoubtedly helped, as did the nice design of the Ruger stock, but the .375 just isn't all that bad of a kicker either.

Last three shots went into a decent cluster, about 1.5 MOA, from sitting with the scope set on 6x. These were 300 gr Sierras at about 2560 fps.

Interesting to me, the Ruger Tropical is about the same size as my old .308 Browning BLR, which I always considered a pretty compact, easy handling rifle. The Number One also handles nicely.

Tried a couple of different loads in the Ruger:

260 gr Nosler AccuBond, 76.5 gr H4350 = 2647 fps

300 gr Sierra SPBT, 75 gr H4350 = 2560 fps

Also had some 300 grainers loaded by the previous owner, using IMR 4064. They shot very well, at about the same velocity as my H4350 loads.

So far, so good. I like this rifle!

What has helped my #1's accuracy immensly is the following.

Loosen up the forum screw. Usually from the factory it comes gorilla tight. Then re-tighten to a snug fit.

Nice gun man. I have yet to shoot my #1 in 458 Lott.

Guy,

Glad you were able to take the 375 H&H out for a test drive.
Looks like you have a nice shooting rifle.

Pop,

Get with the program! Its not healthy to have a new gun sit around and not shoot it!

That actually works great! I had a 223 AI (40 gr bt at 4040 fps) from a #1. Shot like nuts!

Looks like your guns is shooting good enough that you really don't need to do anything to it.
I still need to experiment with powders and seating depth on my .204 I am hpefully that I can get the groups down under an inch.
I have a Browning Low Wall in .22 hornet. That gun wouldn't shoot very well until I loaded it with Lil Gun.Then it shot like a house a fire.

 Guy, I smell a High Cascades Bear in your near future. August 1st isn't that far away and it would be pretty cool to smack one with that.

Guy,

That is a fine looking rifle, and it shoots plenty good for any game in the USA. You done good, man.
