2024 Hunting Season

I’ve put three crop damage deer in the freezer… nice to have tenderloin and back strap often… have two more days of crop damage then I have to focus on caregiving while 87 Year Old FIL tries to fill his bear tag in Michigan UP NewBerry Bear Management Unit. … he’s on the far west end of the Seney Wildlife Refuge..the Beech trees than anchored the wildlife are all dead now and it’s a horribly tangled mess of deadfall…he found a trail in and is pretty solid in the woods, just his ticker is in rough shape..and he’s not a nursing home type…will post pictures when it gets filled.

Had a great season this year in Mississippi. Managed to take a 10, and 9 point, also a doe with my trusty 416 rem mag. Also another doe with the S&W model 29. But the best experience was my 7 year old daughter going with me and killing her first deer. That was the true highlight of my season honestly. Now I have to get her a dedicated first deer rifle for next year, because she definitely has the fever now lol. Luckily for her hunt we borrowed one of my brothers AR in 6.5 grendel and a bog pod death grip tripod. I have to admit that tripod was a pain in the butt to carry around, but completely worth it for her being able to shoot accurately 100% on her own with no help for me.

350 legend is pretty nice for young shooters. Max charge is 20-23 grains depending on the powder… mild recoil… plenty of energy to 200… it’s an option.
Would imagine and AR platform might have less recoil…I’ve been shooting an 18” and it’s 1” at 100 with factory ammo…

Mark,
Congratulations on the crop damage deer.
Best of luck to your F-I-L filling his bear tag. There's a lot of bear on the west end of the Seney stretch.

Was in Grande Prairie on Friday running some errands and picking up some supplies and we ran into a couple we have known for awhile but haven't seen in about 8-9 years. Was great to reconnect with these fine folks and we have been invited out to visit in October and to do some archery elk hunting on their properties...so I may get to arrow my first archery elk yet this year! Regardless, it should be a great time to catch up with old friends!

Yesterday was going to be the best hunting day this week according to the lunar charts, so we headed out early to check an area that has delivered several moose over the years. I briefly thought about taking my new custom LH Rem 700 in 358 Win, but as I have been busy doing some other chores the past fews days, I haven't had a chance to get to the range and double check its zero, so I grabbed my LH Sako 85 in 338 Federal, thinking that if I did get a chance, I would get to see how that Federal 200 gr Trophy Copper bullet would do on a moose.
We saw a cow moose right at first light, and then some mule deer and whitetail does and fawns and a nice little 4x4 mulie buck, shortly after that. Travelling over to another area at the end of the long ridge, we were travelling through several logging blocks when we spied another cow moose that ran across the road in a bend in the road where there was some brush along the road through the block. I was watching where the cow had gone, when Susan spotted a young bull on her side of the road, just behind the brush. It was no more than 15 yards from the truck. It started to run so I cow called to it and it stopped. I got out, loaded the rifle and walked own the trail to get a clear shot at the bull at just 20 yards. (Glad the scope was set at 2 power!) It ran about 5 yards, wobbled and then tipped over. While it may have been more of a drive by shooting, than a regular hunt to call a bull in, I am sure grateful for the meat!
I was glad for the 100' of cable I had in the truck as it worked great to snake that bull out of the slash and up the bank onto the trail so we could field dress it. Love it when you don't have to pack a moose very far!
The bullet went in between the ribs, destroyed the lungs and out between the ribs on the far side, so not much expansion, and very little bloodshot on the ribs, with what their was being on the exit side. With approx. 2530 fps velocity and 2850 ft lbs of energy, and very little resistance, that polymer tipped copper bullet would have spent most of its energy in the forest on the other side of the logging block. The kill was quick and clean.
Had some of the trimmed meat from the backstraps and tenderloins for breakfast this morning; mighty tasty!!!

Congratulations! How nice that it worked out so well for you. The spotter, the hunter, the rifle, and the ammo all did their respective jobs to perfection. I bet you have had your share of times when things went much harder for you.

Yes, anyone who has taken a number of moose has learned that they don't all come easy, and usually like to die in the nastiest holes around, whether that be a deep ravine, a cold stream or a nasty swamp...and I have paid my dues!
Now, I hunt smarter! Or at least I like to think so!!!

Mark,
Glad to see you back. Congratulations to your bride. She shot a whopper!
Honorable mention to her coach. 😉
