22-250 vs 243

I have always wanted to try the 55 BTs one time just to see what its like to shoot a laser.

I have a bag on my bench we can "test" out when I get back to Va in a few weeks buddy. Plus, we need to break that Marlin in! Scotty

Roger that Scotty! I need to fireform more 243AI brass and those 55s should work  The Marlin is ready but have had no time for rolling some .45-70.

I've been pretty blessed to live in some coyote rich areas.... growing up in northern Colorado I had ample opportunity to hone my craft pretty early, I called and shot my first coyote when I was 13 (reckon that was the tail end of 1988). I can remember after I got out of high school we'd kill 8-10 dogs in a weekend pretty regularly...

The above picture was taken in 2005 in WA state... WA has way more coyotes than anyone can imagine... even on the wet side of the state.

Times is a little different now... there's 50-100 times more "coyote hunters" than there was even 15 years ago... seems like every monkey that goes into sportsman's comes out with a predator call of some sort these days. Now I have to work hard to kill 3 or 4 dogs in a weekend... and 8/10 of those are spot/stalk (though I will admit I prefer that method... always have).

I guess I was coyote... when coyote wasn't cool...

Well, I will be home in a week, so it is about time we do some shooting! Scotty

Basically I have played with both. I have used both on varmints but not on coyotes. The main thing is this. If you can get your version (format) of 243 to shoot well you really do not need a 22-250. The 243 will also double as a nice big game rifle. Now if you're going to do tons of varminting then the 22-250 is your gun. You will save on components and barrel life. As far as bullets go both have different styles to accommodate just about everything.

Slow and FAT! How about Big and AWESOME! Those are the only words to properly describe a 358 Win! Scotty

I have both a .22-.250 and a .243 which I mainly use for hunting coyotes. The .22.-.250 is a Remington 700 VLS. And the .243 is a custom built rifle using a Sako L57 action, Lija 26" barrel with 1:12 twist.

After becoming disenchanted with factory V-Max loads in the .22.250 I recently started using the Nosler 50 gr. ballistic tips with the various powders; 41 gr. H380. 34.8 gr. IMR 3031, and 40 gr. Win 760. All performed reasonably well with slight advantage to the IMR 3031 for consistency according to my chrono.

For the .243 I use 70 gr. Nosler Ballistic tips with 40gr. of IMR 3031. I have also use the same load with 70 gr. soft tips. Now if Nolser would make a 70 gr. Partition in a .243 caliber I would have it made. :)

They both work well for coyotes. I tend to use the .22-.250 more often than the .243. At closer distances the .243 can tear up a coyote. The .243 definitely performs better in windy conditions.

buckfynn,

Welcome aboard. Sounds as if you do a bit of predator hunting. Pictures are always appreciated by the members of the forum.

This thread made me laugh so hard I had to register..The 22-250 beats a 243 for critter hunting -handsdown.The 243 is a good hog round and thats pretty much it.Of course it will kill a Yote , but so will a 22mag.The best critter getter there is is a 22-250 with a 40gr B/T,if your hide hunting,If not then it dont matter what you shoot a Yote with.Of course it hepls if you reload too. This opinion comes from hunting and reloading for 40 + years and is just my opinion.

Welcome to the forum! Glad you took the time to register and share your opinion/experience.

Id think with 40 years of experience youd figure out by now the 250 doesn't come close to being as good of a "critter getter" then a 243. How do you even come up with that?

Anything the 250 does, the 243 can do better, and then some...

And at the very least, a 250 with a 40g pill is about worthless unless your shooting squirrels. 55-60g pill makes a little more sense to me if you wanna shoot anything bigger then you wanna stuff in your pocket.

Maybe in your great state of Texas a 250 w/40g pills are great on 100lb whitetails and 10lb mangy dogs, but things are a bit different up North.

LOLL

The 22-250 is NOT a deer catridge - its used for critters down here, always has been - some knucklehead just convinced somebody that they needed something "bigger" than a 22 wildcat to do it with..22-250 handloaded with a 40 gr BT - DRT and no pelt damage..

a 22 will kill a deer but that another argument altogether,

I love the WSM craze and the AR craze thats going on right - you just gotta love advertising and TV - nuff said there.

25-06,

B4 you start posting Ballistic charts etc etc,I know good and well the velocity a 243 has out past 400 yards vs the 22-250,inside 300 yards I will take my handloads and a 22-250 all day long.

Thanks for the welcome.

I just ran across this site again.

Thank you for the welcome.

And yes Sir. I have done plenty of predator hunting.

PS. Hopefully I have settings of the forum right to receive email responses now. Before this post they weren't working for me.
