Had some fun at the range today...
Got to shoot my new Benelli Ethos 28 ga today for the first time!
Tried several different loads of 2 3/4" ammo .
Not sure about % of pellets that should be inside a certain diameter, or what distance patterning is supposed to be done at, but as most of my shooting is at ruffies from about 15 to 35 yards, I thought I would try it at 25 yards with the Improved Modified choke and see how many pellets landed within a 10" circle. I'm sure those with more shotgun experience can teach me what I should know about this...or do for a standard test for patterning...
And which would you use? and why? ( I have my own thoughts, but am interested to learn from more experienced shotgunners...)
The results are as follows:
Fiocchi Exacta Target loads #7.5 3/4 oz. 1300 fps - 83 pellets
Kent Sporting/Target Velocity Diamond Shot #7.5 - 92 pellets
Remington Premier STS Target #8 3/4 oz. 1200 fps - 112 pellets
Winchester AA Target loads #9 3/4 oz. 1200 fps - 154 pellets
And should I get a chance for ducks or pheasant:
Federal Speed Shok Steel #6 5/8 oz. 1350 fps - 100 pellets
Federal Upland Copper #6 3/4 oz. 1295 fps - 87 pellets
Fiocchi Golden Pheasant Nickel #5 7/8 oz. 1300 fps - 61 pellets
Then I tried a couple of loads in the FAIR Iside EM, with the modified and full chokes that came with the shotgun:
Fiocchi Exacta Target loads #7.5 3/4 oz. 1300 fps - Modified - 35 pellets
Fiocchi Exacta Target loads #7.5 3/4 oz. 1300 fps - Full - 117 pellets
Kent Sporting/Target Velocity Diamond Shot #7.5 - Modified - 47 pellets
Kent Sporting/Target Velocity Diamond Shot #7.5 - Full - 78 pellets
This light little shotgun definitely shoots differently off the sand bags (trying to be more consistent in shooting performance for patterning) than off hand!
Hoping to get out Wednesday evening to try busting some clays and pick up some shooing instruction.
