30/06+168 CC ???

Not really an odd powder for 30/06, it started out as a military powder for it.

It's very consistent and easy to work up.

+1

I've used IMR4895 and H4895 in the 30-06. It is a good powder for that cartridge.

It's actually a well regarded powder for the good old .30-06, and works well. I think it's one of the more popular powders for guys running the old M1 Garand rifles.

Heath, I am interested in your work with the 168's. I kinda wanna develop a load for my wife to shoot longer range with, and not spend a ton on bullets. Seems like the 168 CC's would be a great bullet that would have similar trajectory to the 165 AB and cost a heckuva lot less.

Are you loading for a bolt gun or semi?

I am loading for a bolt action, Remington 700 Titanium.

If the weather holds I am going to work with this combo today and see how I do with it.

Nice. It is THAT rifle! Are you putting it together for some steel plinking?

Yeah, I wanted something fairly cheap and easy on the shoulder to shoot steel with while waiting for season. I have an accurate load with H4831 and 165's to hunt with, but if I can burn 20grs less powder, get a little less recoil and get accuracy the steel won't mind. :)

I have used H4895 with 125s (youth load) and 155s (target load). I haven't spent a great deal of time with it yet.

It would also work for the 168s. H4895 is a bit faster than the normal 4350 for the 168s, but I'm guessing somewhere around 49 or 50 grains would be a good starting point. Velocity won't be fantastic, but you should still get more than 2700 fps. Pressures should be low. Or at least that's what Quickload thinks.

Salazar mentions the 46 grain load. He is using a 28-inch barrel. Quickload doesn't like his load suggestion, but I would bet he knows more than Quickload about this subject.

Checked a few this morning with the H4895/168CC combo.

I used Rem brass because I just got a great deal on some cases. I worked up to the 46gr load and it shot around 1.5". 45grs showed promise at just over 1" @ 3.305". I went back and reloaded the 45gr charge and seated them .005" deeper 3.300" and it went into the group pictured. I am going to try 3 more .005" deeper @ 3.295" but having 3 go to .7" @ 100yds is good enough for a hunting rifle that tips the scales @ just a shade over 6lbs loaded up.

The Rem brass is about 10grs per case heavier than the brass mentioned in the article above, probably why a 1gr reduction showed better accuracy?

Thanks guys

It does shoot well. I need to try some 180's out of it but the 165's shoot so well I haven't bothered yet. I have just gotten lucky with charges and seating depths I think.

It's so dang light it gets frisky during load work. This load does not have the snap to it that the others do.

Being so light it sure is nice to hoof around the hills with it.

"Luck" is always nice; and I notice that some people who are meticulous seem to always be lucky. Good job, Heath.

22" barrel, #1 contour I guess???, it's pencil thin.

The stock is a Brown Precision, it was on there when I got the rifle. A guy moved in down the road and had a collection he wanted to thin down. When he showed me a 1st gen Ti with aluminum trigger guard, Brown Precision stock, tuned wide trigger and the round count was about 20 for $800 I took it. I added a PT&G aluminum firing pin and shroud, Talley LW xtended lows and a VXII 2-7x33 Leupold. I wish it had the LR duplex in it and I may have it put in later on.

Have you thought about trying the 168 Ballistic Silvertip? I get astounding performance with those over 52 gr over IMR4895.

I like the stock so far. I have shot it off bags, backpack and a bipod and I don't get any shifts in POI. My rifle is bedded and floated too.

I have looked at the 168 NBT and I may pick some up for this season. I like the NBT's and from what I have seen the 168 has a very thick jacket.
