My brother just bought a new Ruger 30-06 and asked to me to look into a few loads to try with it (for deer under 300 yards and hopefully taking a few coyotes when deer hunting and being able to salvage the hides ) and wants to try some lighter bullets, is a 125 gr BT a good choice to try? Did a search and hardly came up with anything with this bullet. Every one is shooting heavy bullets with this cal., don't know how they would treat a coyotes hide though. Appreciate any info here. Thanks, Tim

I don't think you'll like the results on coyotes with BT's, as I am reasonably confident they will leave pretty good pelt damage. You'd likely be better off with a true varmint gun if you really want to save pelts, or with a bullet of heavier construction that will drop the coyote with only an entry and exit hole of small diameter. If you were dedicating a trip to coyote hunting, you might even consider something like a fmj bullet, and lung shots, as the results will be a little more tracking, but two .308 holes in the pelt is all you'll have to deal with.

The 125 gr BT is too light at 30-06 velocities for deer, the BC is too low to make it a long range bullet. On coyotes, you will get some big holes.
I would look at the 165 gr bullets for both deer and coyotes. I think the 165 gr weight is well matched for the 30-06 as an all around load.

I thought that one of the big three produced a round that had a sabot on it shooting a light weight varmint round?

Well I should have mentioned that this gun will be used as his deer gun but he wanted a bullet that if a coyote showed itself he would be able to take it and salvage the hide. He already has a varmint rifle ( 220 ) for stickly coyotes and fox. I kind of figured the bt might not be the best yote bullet but thought I'd ask the question as this is the site where you guys have all the good advice. Will look at the 165 grainers. Thanks, Tim

Remington make an accelator round, though they can be hard to come by. You can also load your own with a kit from E. Arthur Brown & Company..... http://www.eabco.com/reload02.html They only make it for .30 though.

Those look awsome, have you or anyone else tried them? I might not have to buy a varmit rifle after all.
