I started deer hunting with a borrowed 35 Rem. 760 and missed every deer I seen. The following year I received a 30-30 win 94 and connected on my first deer a "doe" a proud day for me! The third year nothing, but supposedly pass on a 14 point I didn't have clear shot at and a hunter neighboring property bagged! The fourth year dad felt I was big enough for the -06 and bagged my first buck! I'll never forget that day as long as I live! The deer started to stack up from that day forth. Well I now find my self going back to the old -06 after having most of the 300 mags made that are available to a guy. Having the 300WM, 300 RUM and 300WSM the only one of the three I still use is the 300WSM. But I will never be without old faithful the go anywhere hunt anything, battle proven, winning and world liberating 30-06 Springfield!!!!

Long live the 30-06.
I cut my teeth on the 30-06, taking my first WT deer, Antelope and Black Bear. My first reloaded shells were 30-06.

My first centerfire was a 30-06. I've killed more critters than I can count with it.

While she wasn't my first, she is my favorite. I too have a couple magnum rifles but whenever I want to fill the freezer I find myself instinctively reaching for the 30-06 every time.

Great thing about the .30-06 is that it's "enough" for pretty much anything except the BIG dangerous game in Africa and other places, but it's rather easy on the hunter's shoulder.

Long live the .30-06!

Great story Jager. The 30-06 is a great one. Someday I hope to have a nice one myself.

I started with a Winchester 94 30/30 with a side mounted Weaver 1.5-4.5 scope. Papaw carried a Rem 7400 30/06 with a 3-9x40 Weaver with tip off rings. I never killed anything with that 30/30 and I knew, I KNEW if I could get a 30/06 critters would literally come running to their death at the end of the barrel. Papaw was a very good hunter and the gun you carry has more to do with it than experience, or even sitting still for more than 2 mins, or so I thought. :)

I got my 1st 30/06 is 1993 a Ruger 77 MKII, still have it. So far I have killed 0 deer with it too, lol.

Of all the chamberings I have the 30/06 is still my favorite. I have owned several and still have 2, the Ruger and I tripped into a 1st generation Rem 700 Titanium 30/06 in a Brown Precision stock a couple years back, these 2 will cover everything I need.

My 30-06 is like a red-headed stepchild. It is always there, trying to please. And it does please. It just doesn't get the respect it deserves. It delivers more than adequate accuracy, and does so quite well. It drops game smartly, so long as I do my part. This current 30-06 is the third one I've owned. I doubt I'll ever be without a 30-06, but I doubt it will ever get all the respect it deserves. It is a venerable cartridge that will get the job done.

My first rifle was a Marlin 336 in 30-30. The rifle was a Xmas present and was bought used but was in very good shape. It wouldn't shoot Winchester ammo which I found out latter was .307 diamiter after having a gun smith pull and mike the bullets, they key holed badly, Federal and Remington ammo grouped nicely so that is what I used in it.
I stumbled on a used Remington 725 in 30-06 and fell in love with it. Killed my first WT with it and many more. Shot the throat out and had it rebarreled to 257 Roberts. I felt under gunned with the little Roberts so I went looking for another 06 which I found in a Ruger 77. It gave me problems on my first season I hunted with it. It rained on opening day and got soaked, the forearm warped, even the new Weaver scope leaked and had moisture in it, so I had to reinlet the barrel channel to hit anything with it and after the season completely beded the stock and renforced the forearm with acraglass. Replaced the Weaver with a new Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 and it has been my go to gun every since. I would be lost with out it. Oh yes I still have the 725 Rem in 257 Rob, I use it to surgically eradicate ground hogs  .

Yep, many cartridges will do certain things better than the .30-06, but it's hard to find one which will do as many things as well.

I forgot to add if I could only have one rifle in one caliber it would be a 30-06!

That's what everyone says till they increase their bore size .050"..

Just joking with you buddy. A good 30-06 is hard to beat.

My new .30-06 Rem 700 CDL is heading for the range tomorrow for the first time. I'm pretty excited about that. Mounted the old 2-7x Redfield scope on it a couple of days ago. Have some ammo loaded. Haven't even shot this thing yet... Trigger is adjusted a little high, like around 5 pounds, but at least it's crisp. I can work on that later.

Kind of hoping the rifle likes the 180's & Ramshot Hunter combo...

If not, my old standby 165's & H4350 isn't a poor choice either.

Will be interesting to see how the "new" Remington shoots. Am hoping it's MOA or better, which will make it a good "big brother" to my .25-06 700 CDL.

Does that CDL have a 24" tube or a 22" tube? I wish more of the 30-06 factory guns had the 24" barrel, not that it really benefits velocity wise, I just like the feel of the longer rifle personally. Of course I hunt in woods mixed with open terrain so handiness isnt the issue that it can be in other places such as either the East or Weat coast.

It's a 24" barrel, just like my .25-06 CDL. I've always liked 24" barrels on my bolt action rifles. They handle well for me.

That said, a stubby carbine type barrel can be real handy!

Guy

Thanks Scotty. Someday I'll post up a few photos of Dad's Springfields. One as-issued, one very tastefully "sporterized" by his father, while Dad was overseas in the years right after WWII.

Don't own, nor have i even fondled a CDL but I've seen them on GB while looking for something else. They sure put some nice wood on those things.

On the .30 '06 I think this needs to be a part of any man's basic battery. Whether a novice or a man of long experience. i got my ADL circa mid-80s, had it bedded and stuck a Bushnell Scope Chief 1.5x4.5x20mm on it. That thing has killed all type and manner of deer.
I upgraded the scope to a Leupold 2.5x8x40 about '91 or so.

Now a man may have need of, or simply want, magnums or varmint cartridges and that's all to the good but in my humble opinion if a man doesn't have a .30 '06 in his collection then he has a hole in his arsenal. A hole he should fill.

Edit: forgot to mention Guy, those are some damn fine looking rifles. Love the lines of the combs and can only assume they have those cheek pieces I like so much.
