300 H&H

I owned and hunted with two different Model 70, .300 H&H's for about 40 years. I also used my .270 Win 70 (1949) mostly for deer and the .300 H&H for elk and longer range hunting in Wyoming and Utah. I had first a plain Jane Model 70 from the 1950's and later an Alaskan from the 1950's. Both of them would push a 165 Partition at 3150 or so. They would shoot a 180 Partition at about 3000 fps, this is with IMR 4350 and magnum Fed 215 primers. They essentially equaled the .300 WSM in power and accuracy, plus they were much easier to hand load and load into the chamber than the WSM.

Great reading Gerry. I think I ran across it somewhere else. Looking at QL, the 300 H&H does pretty well. With RL22 or MRP it'll scoot 180's and 200's pretty well.

Charlie, any issues with the 300 separating early, if you just bump the shoulder. I know it isn't a huge shoulder, but I would think if we treat it the same as we do the others, it should hold together, but I have no experience with this.

How about Model 70 300 H & H made 1939 with Leupold 3.5x10 40mm CDS with add Windage dial My Ballistic Turret from Leupold is from 250 yds to 775 yds. In Burris Signature Rings with 15 MOA. With Noslers 180gr Partations Loaded to 3000 FPS. At 300 yds 5 shot group of 3.4 inches. I loaded up some 180 Nosler Accubonds but have yet try them, I plan on switching over once I shoot my last Box of Partation's. Great Rifle & the price was right Free. Yes it is very smooth action. Headed to Idaho next week I hope, I get a Elk.

3.4 inches at 300 yards is awesome in my book! I don't think I would be able to shoot that well even if the rifle could.

Jeeze! Beautiful rifle and an awesome shooter! Way to shoot! That is not making it any easier resisting another Pre64.

I can't talk you out of one either. I have a No. 1S in 300 H&H.

A Ruger #1 is still in the running but they are not the easiest rifle to locate especially in the desirable calibers such as the 300 H&H. They are great for us left handed shooters who are tired of rifles that only come chambered for a small number of cartridges. I have a 1B in 6mm Remington I bought from a gentleman here on the forum and it will be my primary whitetail rifle this year.

Sounds like a viable option to look into. Seems like I have heard of the website somewhere before.

300H&H's are just flat out cool. ;)

I have a prewar 300H&H. It shoots 180pt's into tiny groups at 3015fps. I've killed two whitetails with it, and it really wrecked them. The 180PT sure delivers on the terminal end.
