300 rum

I have a M700 LSS in 300RUM-does not have the fancy new recoil pad-recoil is still not bad shooting 200 grain partitions. My rifle will general put 3 shots into 3/4 inch or so at 100 yards. my only load so far is the 200 grain Partition using 87 grains of IMR7828. Velocity is 3080-3100fps. After browsing this here site, I just might have to try 200 grain accubonds and Retumbo! 8)

Kinda hard at this point not to show off my SAKO 75 300 ULTRA !

200 grain AccuBond
3175 fps
95 gr Retumbo
.292" at 100 yards
Below is a group at 300 yards
.675" at 300 yds.

WOW POP!
I MUST try retumbo and accubonds in my 300RUM now!
Very nice shooting, I must say! :) :)

Thank you although Sako is mostly responsible for the accuracy!

Pop - what do you think of that 95 grains of Retumbo and the 200 grain bullet aside from the obvious excellent accuracy and velocity you're seeing?

Is it too hot a load?

I worked up to it - and it certainly seems safe - but man... That's a whole lot of gunpowder! Neither the rifle nor the cases are telling me that I'm in trouble with pressure. Velocity is at 3128 fps.

Thanks, Guy

It should be going a little faster then 3125fps. In my buddys sendero, 95g retumbo/200g AB produces 3225fps, and .75" at 200 yards, then I shot a group that same day at 525 that measured 3.5". This was done w/ very little load development. It seems like a lot of powder, but I think its pretty safe. I went up to 94g H-1000 and thats a little hotter load I think. Velcoity was right at 3200fps in my rifle. Accuracy was 1.5" at 300 yards. Not all rifles like retumbo or whatever kinda powder, as you all know. My rifle shot so good w/ H1000 and REtumbo, that I never got a chance or the need to try RL-25 or anything else.

Interesting isn't it?

With what is supposed to be the same powder charge, 95 grains of Retumbo, three rifles are getting three different velocities:

26" CDL = 3128 fps
26" ? Sako = 3175 fps
26" Sendero = 3225 fps

All sorts of reasons for the variation: neck tension, actual powder charge variations (what reads 95 on my scale may read 94 on another scale), powder lots, brass lots, primer type, barrel roughness, chamber dimensions... There's a host of reasons for such a velocity spread - and it doesn't really surprise me. I had one .300 Win mag that refused to send a 180 at anything above about 2880 fps or so - almost 100 fps below what a factory loaded 180 was supposed to shoot. It just happens...

BTW - so far I've been shooting 200 grain Sierra SPBT Gamekings and also 200 grain Nosler Partitions - both left over from an earlier project. There's another reason for the variation! These velocity figures are from the Sierras...

That's why I like having a chronograph! Regards, Guy

Yes, I also have noticed some oddities with my 300 RUM-
My 200 grain partitions with 87 grains IMR7828 chronographed 3080-3100-I also loaded a few dozen 200 grain accubonds(everything else the same) and 3140-3150 fps the same day. The only thing that was different was the OAL , so I suppose that could account for the difference. Ah well, that is part of what makes this hobby interesting!

Different chambers baby!

This load may be max BUT it has been safe in every 300 RUM I tried it in.
