300 Win Mag-150 PT or AB

What about a 300 Win Mag with 150 grain bullets? I use mine primarily for long range deer hunting as the elk hunting I usually get is closer range and I like to use my 30-06 for that. Sometimes though I use my 300 Mag. I want to load a 150-165 grain bullet for a little flatter trajectory and less recoil. I use 165 grain bullets in my 30-06 and have never lost an animal, I have however had to shoot one that was hit a little far back three times. The first shot went into the guts at an angle and the second broke her back and the third was into the head to finish her. But I have always gotten the desired performance out of it. No explosions or poor penetration. I do want to have a 150grain at 3150 fps or so and the 165 at 3050 fps. Any Ideas? I have H4350 and RL22 powders to choose from.
 
You should be able to achieve about 3300 fps easy out of the 150 AB or PT.
Go with the more accurate one. Let the rifle decide.
 
Hey POP thanks for the response. I know that a good rifle is capable of shooting the 3300 fps you mentioned yet I want to stay under 3200 fps for barrel-life reasons. With the 165, which I think is what I will end up shooting rather than the 150, for the occasional elk, I will be trying for a mv of 3050 fps. Any ideas, remember, RL22 or H4350.
 
77gr of re22 and a 165gr AccuBond works. i tried some 150 balistic tips but had poor accuracy in the rifle i tried them in with h4831sc
 
My question is,why would you want to use a 150 grain bullet in a 300 win. mag? I shot one for over 20 years religiously, and found that they performed best with bullets in the 180 or 200 grain class. I tried the 150 grain on 5 deer at various ranges, and even at 175 yards had explosions on impact. I even had one not expand at all, at about 15 yards.It just went through, and left a pencil size hole on exit. The second one in the head dropped the deer like a rock. I personally would look at a heavier projectile. There isn't going to be that much of a difference in recoil if you shoot the heavier bullets out of it, and the downrange performance is going to be greatly enhanced by the heavier slug. There's no flies on a 300 win. mag, and it will still shoot plenty flat with the heavies and deliver a serious payload of energy on impact.
 
It has been a long time since I played with a 300 Winnie.

My load for everything was 180 gr with 76 gr of RL22 or H4831.

I am not home so I can not run quickload for you however if you e-mail me I can do that.

In the 150 gr range I would think you would have to be in the 79 gr of RL 22 range and 70-72 gr range with H4350. E-mail me with coal and barrel length and I will post here or e-mail you back what Q/L says.

Hey Guys, thanks for the help, especially you POP...I have decided to use the 165grain AccuBond as it is more of a medium weight bullet. Has a little more beef for an occasional elk and hits almost as hard as the 180 grainer will. I want to get like 3050 to 3100 fps with this bullet. I plan to load about 3.345-3.350 as COAL and my barrel length is 23.75 inches. I shoot a winchester 70 classic stainless with a 4x12x40mm Leupy on it.

I got in on this topic alittle late but sure would like some info regarding the 150 gr AccuBond in a 300wm. What I am presently shooting is a 300 wm remington sendero with heavy varmiter barrel with a 26 in barrell with the HS precision stock. I'm shooting 76 gr of rl22 ,fed match large rifle primers ,remington brass.The coal is 3.554. The gun shoots one holers regular and is an awsum alalfa patch deer rifle . I just need to Know how fast its travelin or your best estimate
