Did a little bit of experimenting with the 308 yesterday. Loaded up some 165 AB's using RL15, CCIBR2's and WW cases.

I had a few stand outs in the groups. I do think the barrel needs to be floated as two shots was about all the rifle would stand before it would toss shots. If I let it cool back to ambient temps, it was fine.

I also banged away with the 45-70 as well. Here are three shots from 50 yards with the XS sights. 40gr RL7, 405 Hardcast, Starline cases..

I added a few more shots to that group

I just love that 45-70. These 405's run at 1575 and seem to shoot well. I think I might need a little taller front sight, as I am still shooting a touch high at 100, but it is close enough for moose or Buffler!

That is some superb grouping. Good riflery, Scotty. You make the Marines proud.

Scotty

Awesome shooting with the 45-70!
The 308 is in excellent shape. I bet if you pillar bedded it, she would really tighten up for ya.

I am impressed, beautiful. The 70 is doing great as always.

I ordered new WW cases for my 308 and some 168 match bullets to try in a couple of rifles.

It just has that cheapo plastic stock on it. Pretty sure I will just sand out the barrel channel and see what it does.

Bill, this little Ruger is fun to shoot, but 308's aren't exactly exciting to shoot... It would make a good load for the wife should she wanna do some hunting?

308 looks good Scotty but man the 45-70 shoots light out. That 45/70 would be great on bear or elk in the timber.

That is kinda a big dream Bill, I would love to bust a bear or elk in the Timber with the 45-70. It would for sure be one awesome rifle for bears though. That 405 at around 1600 would shut just about anything down I imagine and these Guide Rifles just carry too good!

Scotty I'll bet some day in the not to distant future you will end up doing both. Oregon has LOTS of timber with elk and bears.

Scotty nice work there. I'm with the others. It would be awesome to get an elk, any elk with that 45-70!

My buddy Don and his antelope buck with an old rolling block 45-70 he had a gunsmith here build. The stock blank for it came off a walnut tree many years ago back east from where our gunsmith's family home was. Here I go again Scotty with another   picture! You might have to use it on those whitetails you got back home sir!

"but 308's aren't exactly exciting to shoot... It would make a good load for the wife should she wanna do some hunting?"

Oh, ouch! The pain of it all! I think I've been slammed!

Scotty, you could probably stalk and kill an elk with your Ka-Bar fighting knife... Now that might be exciting enough for you. Maybe?

Good shooting!

That does require some skill. However, generally it was a party of hunters that took quarry. Few tackled mastodons and mammoths alone.

Lucky for the mastadons and mammoths they already went extinct. Give Scotty a .358cal atlatl and they'd go extinct again, for sure!

I don't believe I have that one in my safe. I may have to do some scrounging on Canadian Gunnutz.

For heavy, northern game I think a premium atlatl is recommended... Nosler?

Put it on the bullet list guys!

That was in no way a knock on your 308 Guy... Just that I bought the rifle with the wife hunting in mind. I used it a few times for deer, even taking one bear with it too. It is a nice little rifle. Needs a bedding job as I think the stock is probably very tight on the barrel and affects it alot as it warms any little bit. The trigger is the Hawkeye trigger and is actually very nice. The mounts are mediums and I think they should be lows, as I don't get a great stock weld with the rifle. I have enough other rifles I shoot the little 308 goes neglected. It does shoot well though when given a little love.

I did smile as it shot the 165 AB's and RL15 very well for some loads I just threw together. They were kinda steals from you too! I think those 165's at 2800 would be a pretty good combo. Might just have to hunt it some more...

Great picture David. That would be a blast stalking antelope with the 45-70! Everytime I pick up the Guide Rifle my mind wanders to hunting! It is just such a nice carrying and shooting rifle.

That 45-70 is lookin' deadly. 8)

As for the .308, I've always found it to be a sweet, little cartridge and a good 165 grn bullet is about ideal. I no longer own a .308, but I would not hesitate to carry one for general hunting.
