308

I have been wondering too. Have a 308 load with 178 grain ELD x with reloder 17 that has promise. I get staball 6.5 but can't find reloder powder.

Winchester also makes StaBall Match that is comparable to Varget. That would get my vote.

If I had a custom throated 308 win for 200gr bullets I'd definitely try 6.5 StaBall. It's closer burn rate to imr4831 than H4350. Pretty slow. Hodgdon data gives it top velocity in 300WSM.

That said, it won't hurt to try it with 180gr bullets. Worst case scenario is a quickly heavily fouled barrel, you'd have to stay diligent in thorough bore cleaning.

Haven’t tried it in .308 yet, but it should work fine with heavier bullets. It’s a bit slow-burning, more like RL-17 or IMR 4831. Might not be ideal for lighter projectiles, but worth a try if that’s what you’ve got.

I gave it a shot in .308 with 178 ELD-X — it worked decent, but velocities were a bit lower than with RL-17. Seemed cleaner though. Might be better with 180+ grain bullets. Worth messing with if you’ve got some on hand.

For some reason I got it in my mind sb6.5 was designed for the Creedmore, which I’ve used it in. Never considered it for the 06 or 300wsm. Might have to give it a try in the 275 Rigby as I’m running low on 17 and 4350 is just so, well, old school. :)

I picked up a 1lb of the StaBal when it came out and it was slow. It fell between RL-17 and RL-22.
I found that as well. In my 270 Win the charge weights mirror IMR4831. Works great. Velocity and accuracy are there, but it takes a little more of it than Hodgdon says. It may work with heavy billets in the 308. I also agree that Match would probably serve you better.

I have not tried any other powder in the 308 besides Varget and IMR 4064. It shoots well with Varget for me that I have never switched to any other powder, works great from 150 to 178 grains for me. I have yet to try the 180 Ballistic Tips, I'm sure I can make it shoot. ;)

Don,
SB6.5 really shines in the 375 H&H Mag too.
