338-06AI Range Day

CS-Those are max loads for sure I can always drop a grain or two. Although I think they are getting better. The 3.310 and 3.300 looked better. Maybe next week will be better.

The PTs at 3.300 are looking pretty good, Jake. My .338's, .340's at al liked the 225 PT. Seted short as Scotty suggested. I was shooting them in my .340 at factory COAL and getting 3080 fps and 1-1/2 inch, 200 yard groups.

I use H414 in my 338-06AI with 225gr with Federal 210 primers as this was the only powder I had at the time. I used a medium hot load of 58.5gr for fireforming my brass (book max load of 60.0)...These rounds shot under 1" groups...cant recall loads with fireformed brass. I will have to dig out my reloading journal and get back to you. I haven't shot this rifle since 2009, but I sure loved the way it shot.

Well I'm getting closer. Shot a few today finally seeing some progess with the 225AB.

The PT opened up as I shortened them and they were close before so I got a window with them and same with the AB.

Jake, your groups are looking good. I would bet you just need to keep pushing the AB's off the rifling and you'll strike a good load pretty quick. Looks like you are on the edge right now.

PT's do the same to me. They tend to like being a little closer to the rifling in my rifles as well. You gotta get this 338 ready pretty quick don't ya? Got an elk tag in your pocket this Fall don't you?

Well I've been doing a lot of shooting with it and finally got some results I'm content with. Went back and shot some different charges then settled with 61gr of H414 at a COAL of 3.375". I put a new trigger spring in the rifle and am contemplating bedding it yet. As it has a little more variance than I like to see. Throws shots 1 or 4 on a pretty consistent basis but it is shooting well enough now that I think it's capable of getting the nod for my cow elk hunt in November. I didn't Chrony it but I'm thinking I'm between 2700-2750.

The last group of 6 ran 1.5" with shots 3-5 at .312" and 3-6 just under .7"

Those are coming along quite nicely, Jake. Nothing terrible about those groups.

I think you'll kill elk all day long with that load Jake. I am sure there is more accuracy to be had, but if it isn't bedded yet, you might be great with what you have till you get it bedded down tight. Looks plenty good to kill elk. Take them out further if you can and see if they hold up at 200 and 300.

Thanks guys. I'm happy with it. I need to load a few up calculate some drops and get her a touch more shooting with it. Get a Chrony on it to find where I am.

Congrats on the shooting. Looks like you are getting it dialed in. I too may use mine for my cow elk hunt for my tag for the season of November 1-December 20.

I am at 61.0gr of H414 also with 225gr AB's. I can tweak mine still...just need to find the time to do it.

The TTSX's I have not reloaded in the fireformed brass, but they shot just like the AB's when I was fireforming the brass with medium/hot load of 58.5gr of H414. I just like the performance and results I have had with the Accubonds in other calibers.

Well I bet we're off the same reamer so I'd take a wild guess on .045" off the lands. On my rifle that's a COAL of 3.375". It should be where you want it.
