.338/.378

G'Day Fella's,

Yellow Dog, the .338-378 Weatherby, is the top dog of factory .338 cartridges!
IIRC, the Rem .338 RUM is a bit more powerful than the .338 Lapua Mag and the .338-378 is a bit more powerful, than the .338RUM!!!

There are a couple of .338 Wildcats (based on the .505 Jeffery ?), that are even more powerful but.........

Hope that helps

Doh!

Homer is spot on. The .338-.378 will let you know that you fired it. It will smack game down right smart.

The 338-378 Wby is the biggest commercially available 338. The Weatherby factory load pushes a 250 gr PT 3060 fps and maybe you could get a little more speed with hand loads. FWIW, I get 3024 fps with the 250 gr PT and Retumbo in my 338 RUM.

Homer,

Probably what your referring to is the .338 Snipetac which is based on the 505 Gibbs or .408 Cheytac case. I'm sure someone along the line has done a .338 on a .500 Jeffrey's case but the Cheytac case is more popular.

yellow dog,

The 338 Edge is a good one and what Remington should have offered. It can be built on a M700 action.

My gunsmith built a 338 O'Brien, which is a 338-300 Rum (Edge) AI for OU812 here on the forum. It drives a 250 gr PT at 3250 fps from a 26" barrel with 103.0 grs H1000. Talk about a sledge hammer!

The 338 edge will do everything you need with cheaper and better brass.

Remington ultra mag brass sucks the same as Weatherby brass but it is cheaper. Shawn Carlock got Bertram to make 338 Edge brass that isn't cheap but it's suppose to be of very good quality.

placed an order with pacnor for a 338 edge barrel. now i'm excited. (I wanted to build the obrien but would need to buy a reamer @ $180.00 no thanks)

went with the 28 inch sendero ss super match with 6 flutes.

What do you guys think of Pacnors "Breaks" ?

thanks for all the help i was leanig towards the edge but the .338/ .378 sure sounds cool.

Call Rob Canze at Williams Gun Sight in Davison, MI. 810 653 2131

I have a Williams Brake on my 338 RUM, very effective.

I have always been told that..... There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Rob says it can be done but I do not see how the cavernous (125 gr of water) 338-378 Bee can not do it but a substantially smaller case can (110.5 grains of water).

Same thing with the 375 Tejas. (375 Rum Imp) They claim 3100 fps with a 300 grain. I can barely get away with that with a 378 case and it is bigger than any rum configuration out there.

It is like saying a particular version of the 7mm-08 will outdo the 7mm rem mag......

I must be missing something

changed my mind and think im giong to play copy cat to jake and build the ".375 Jmad" (.338/.375 rugger AI)

shooting for a 8 lb riffle with scope. think ill need a break for sure :(

The 338 O'Brien I had would do 3100 with a 250 Partition but no more. Rob does build one hack of a fine accurate rifle though I'll give him that.

Not a bad choice at all.
