So the 264 and the 338 Win Mags have pretty much been the guns of discussion lately and as I am planning to invest in both in the next couple of years, the 338 this year and the 264 next year if all goes according to plans, I have a question of bullets for the 338. Going to use 200/210 grain bullets because elk are all the bigger I have to contend with here in Oregon, would load bigger if there were moose or bears. I like the looks of the 200 AB and 210 PT but the 200 E-tip has also caught my eye. Anyone done much with the E-tip in 338 Win Mag? I probably will go with the 200 AB just because I like them but any input is appreciated.

And by the way going to use 130 ABs and 140 PTs in the 264...no other way to go in my mind.

I use the 210 Partition in my 338-06 for everything up through moose. You will not be under-gunned with this bullet for moose in the 338 mag. The Ontario moose I shot in 2007 was estimated to have a live weight of about 1100 lbs, and the little bitty caliber I shoot, (that's a shot at Scotty) dropped it with one 210 pt bullet.

Are you planning on finding an existing .264 win mag or having one built? If plan on just using 130-140 grain bullets you will want to make sure it has at least a 9 twist to stabilize the longer bullets.

The 338 200 gr E-Tip is a very robust bullet. It is accurate, expands well and penetrates deep!
These were shot from my 338 RUM and recovered in water jugs at 100 yds. MV 3150 fps.

Of the Noslers, I would certainly go w/ the 210 PT if your rifle shoots it well (mine have all shot it well). It performs very well, great penetration.

As to the monolithics, I believe I would cast my lot at this time w/ the Barnes TTSX, as it has a head start on the E-Tip in experience and reputation. The TTSX is the gold standard in consistent expansion, great penetration and near 100% weight retention.

I would think the 210PT or 200AB would work for everything. Now that I have some 200's I may just load up a bunch and see what their all about. I won't mess with all copper unless I'm forced to. Lead bullets work as well or better for me. Scotty

Yeah Scotty thats kind of my sentiments as well, I don't like the idea of solid copper slugs, I am a lead bullet man. That stuff has been blown all out of proportion. Think Im going to go for the 200 AB and 210 PT and whichever shoots the best and call it a day. Thanks for all the input fellas.

I've had the best luck with the 200gr BT/BSST.
I shoot them over 3k out of a 26" barrel. Group well, and put the thump on anything I care to shoot with them.

If you could shoot the 200gr Etips at 3k, and they grouped, well, that would be a pretty potent combination.

AS- What load are you shooting with the 200's? Scotty

Scotty,

I would start with RL 19.

So would I, but I was just wondering. Seems like an even split between the 4350 crowd and the RL19 crowd for the 338. Scotty

Several .338s over the years have sung sweetly for me with IMR 4350. It's gotten a slightly bad rap lately from the newest worry for rifle nuts - temperature sensitivity. H4350 is very close to the same speed (my latest batch is actually faster than IMR), but doesn't group quite as well for me. Never tried RL19; RL17 is OK, but believe I like the 4350s better.

My 25-06, 270, 30-06, and 300 Win Mag shoot both the H and the IMR versions of 4350 quite well. I probably will use 4350 as I keep a very healthy supply of it around. It has never let me down, either kind.

Of the bullets you listed I would go with the 210 PT. I'm also a big fan of the 225 AB. I had a hard time with RL-19 and H/IMR 4350. I tried Ramshot Hunter and all is very well. Give it a try if the others don't work out for you. I'm getting 2875 out of a 26" tube, and 3/4 MOA with 75.5 gr of hunter.

Yeah thats what Im thinking, a 200-210 grain bullet at 2800-2900 fps muzzle velocity. A great elk load for days I need something with a little more pop than my 30-06.
