I am going to New Mexico 10/12/07 for a guided Elk hunt. I haven't used my 375 H&H on a hunt yet and want to use it on this elk hunt. I have used Nosler partitions in my 300 Win Mag and 300 Weatherby many times with great results. I have also used and will never use again the Nosler Ballistic Tip. I shot a Antelope at 185 yards with a 140 Grain ballistic tip out of my 270 Weatherby and it failed on impact and destroyed my hide.
I have Nosler Ammo with 260 grain accubonds which shoot very good groups out of my 375 H&H. The range can be from 25 yards in the timber to 400 yards in the fields. What bullet do you recommend I buy from Nosler for this Elk hunt.
Thank You
Joe

I would bring what you are using right now... that is, the great Accubonds! You can't go wrong with that bullet. It's the one I will be using on moose this year.

SHOULD GET YOU STARTED.....

You better post pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Joedjr - Hey, best of luck to you on the hunt, it should be outstanding! Some huge bulls down in New Mexico...

Buddy of mine here in Washington state got a .375 H&H two years ago, just because he liked it. I don't remember what load he used, but he hunted elk with it only a couple of months after buying it. His was a Ruger Number One single shot, with the laminated stocks.

Told me that he hunted in fairly deep snow, and it was quiet enough that he managed to stalk within 20 yards of a feeding bull elk, mostly by keeping a big ponderosa pine between him and the elk. He touched it off, right behind the shoulder, and said the elk didn't even quiver, just fell straight down, dead right there. Blew chunks of elk parts into the snow on the other side. He came away mighty impressed with the .375 H&H for elk, although he'll be the first to admit that it wasn't "necessary."

Again, good luck, you should be in for a great hunt.

Regards, Guy

Running some numbers into my computer, this is the data that came out... I get 2750 fps average 15 feet from the muzzle using RL-15. Its interesting to see the remaining energy at 300 yards using the AccuBond! You have the same power at that distance as you would get a the muzzle with a 30-06...

The .375 H&H with 260 accubonds should be perfect.

I use them for Moose and the combination of trajectory, penetration, meat damage suits me.

joedjr,

Welcome to the forum.

The 260 gr AB in your 375 H&H is perfect for elk.

JD338

.375 with a 260 AccuBond is ideal. I shot 2 elk the first year. one at 30 yds the other at about 250 yds. Perfect expansion with little un- necessary meat loss even at 30 yds. Penetrated the entire stomach of a bull at 250yds and took out the heart / lungs. 61% weight retention, 71 caliber expansion. There is no such thing as too much gun for a 800 pound bull elk only poorly constructed bullets. The A/B will penetrate and wont blow up. The only limiting factor is recoil tolerance. Most hunters don't use enough gun because of that.
Good Hunting
