Oneonek sent me a bunch of awesome cast bullets for the 45-70. I decided to load a few up today to see how they shoot. Loaded them over a mild charge of RL7 so I am thinking they will run about 1500-1600 or so. Anyhow, here is a picture of the bullet and loaded rounds. Can't wait to give em a go. They are very nice and should stop anything that needs stopping I think!

Is there any lube in the groves of the ones you reloaded?

They are tumble lubed Mike with Daves own concoction.. They are plenty lubed though.. Just not filled like a regular cast would be.. He sent some 470's as well. Might have to try them soon too!

That is one serious looking bullet and I am interested in how they shoot.

That looks like some serious medicine Scotty!..for close in work, you can't beat it!...Lou

Scotty,

Those look really nice! What weight are they?
The 470 gr you mentioned should be a real penetrating power house.

They are 405's Jim. Might try loading some of the 470's as well. Those look like some beasts as well.

Thanks Scotty.
I like the looks of that 405 gr hard cast bullet.

Another heads up, this is my first use of Starline Brass. I will have more upon firing and reloadinng, but just by the looks and first loading, it is premium brass for the 45-70. It is think, without flaws and could be loaded right out of the bag.. It is impressive and probably less money than Winchester.

I have tried Winchester 45-70 brass for awhile. I have dealt with alot of splits, case head seps, and just about every other malady. These were from mild to +P Garret type loads. The Winchesters were dented, malformed and generally junk..

So, if you can, give Starline a try. I don't think you will be disapointed.

I hope to get out to the range shortly with the 45-70. I pulled the scope off of it, so I am going to use the XS sights for awhile with this heavy cast.

I've never used Starline, but I've heard a lot of good about the quality.

Doc, I've used starline pistol cases (38, 357, .45) and they hold up very well. I ordered them through midway and found them in perfect condition when I opened the the shipping carton. No dents and ready to go. I believe their made at the Sierra bullet company.

Your right Lou.. It is a blaster for sure. Love the rifle. Can't wait to try it out on paper to see what the big bullets do. I loaded em fairly mild, so as to not beat me up too much. If they seem decent, I might bump em up a hair..

Really? Thats pretty neat. Again, can't say enough good about them. They weren't driven over or monkeyed up in any way. Ran em through the expander, primed and charged them.. They were excellent. Hard to beat the price also.
