Thinking of picking up a Zastava M70 in 6.5 and was wondering what a good powder would be to try with 130-140gr bullets. Mostly WT deer and thinking BT's or AB.

H 4350, IMR 7828 ssc, IMR 4451 is where I would start. We are currently loading with H 4350 in my wife's Tikka. I really like what the 130 gr AccuBond and 140 gr Ballistic Tip do on deer. I know there are other bullets but those are my favorites.

In my first 6.5x55 that I handloaded for (Rem 700 Classic), I worked up to the max loads of IMR4350 for both the 140 gr Partitions and X Bullets in their respective manuals. Both shot very well, but the edge in accuaracy went to the X Bullet, as it would consistently put 5 shots into just under an inch at 200 yards.
I haven't started handloading for my new left handed 6.5 yet, a beautiful Sako 85 Hunter. I have high hopes for this rifle, as the very first 3 rounds out of this rifle with factory ammo went into about 3/8" at 100 yards! Going to be trying Re-26 with the 140 gr AccuBonds.

One of the 4350s, I use a lot of Accurate 4350, has really been very accurate and velocity is plenty in my 6.5x55 that I hunt with. I have a number of rifles in this caliber that are stock military but I have one Mauser 96 that someone started hacking on that I got a number of years ago really cheap at a gun show and I made a sporting rifle out of it. I left the 29" barrel on it and with the AA4350 powder I can get 3000 fps with 120 gr bullets and 2800 fps with 140 gr bullets and still according to the Accurate manual be under 46000 CUP pressure which is the suggested max pressure for these small ring Mauser rifles. I have killed a bunch of white tail deer with this rifle using 120 Sierra Pro Hunter and Nosler Ballistic Tips and 140 gr Hornady Interlock and Sierra Game King bullets. All do a wonderful job. The 130 or 140 Nosler AccuBond would be a good one bullet do it all for big game with the 6.5x55. I use the 130 AccuBond in my 264 Win Mag at a muzzle velocity of 3350 fps and it is AWESOME on deer from 25 to just a touch over 500 yards so far.

I use H4831SC with Hornady 129 and Nosler 140 BT RL22 works well with 140 gr bullets also. If you try 120 gr bullets try RL19. Dan.

H4831sc and the new IMR 4995 for the heavies in the Swede works best for me.

Thanks for the data Doug. I ended up going a slightly different path and bought an older Steyr Mannlicher M in 6.5x55. I have always wanted one since I first laid eyes on them back in the 80's.

I have a Steyr Mannlicher Classic stutzen in 6.5x55 SE and been doing some testing since I bought it last year.
Currently I have regular 1/2"-3/4" groups at the range with the load I use. That's using a rest of course, but it makes me smile. :grin:

I'm using the Hornady 123gn SST bullet and the load goes: Primer CCI200, Propellant IMR4350 x 45.8gns Approx OAL 3.090" & Comparator OAL with the above bullet 2.572"
Works for me, but I haven't yet shot any deer with it...
for some reason or other, my .25-06 keeps falling into my hands when I go hunting!

I use RL26 and the 140 Accubonds in my 6.5 Swede. 22" Featherweight and speed is a tick under 2900 most days. Accurate as heck and really is a potent combo. Love shoot that rifle and the Swede is just such a danged sweetheart.

Yup. Reloader 26 and the 6.5x55 a very “sweet Swede” indeed.

I am going to try RL26. Heard some great things about it and supposed to be more temperature stable.

No, the 94/96 is said to use weaker steel, so be careful with the pressure.
The 98 is more forgiving there.

Btw: that rifle is a beauty! But being a south-paw... :-(
Good to see it has the safety at the side. The original one of the 98 is a pain with low-mounted scopes

No, the 94/96 is said to use weaker steel, so be careful with the pressure.
The 98 is more forgiving there.

So are you saying Steyr's Mausers are M98's? Hard to tell by that picture but the bolt shroud didn't look right to me at first glance to be a M98.
