I'm gonna start load development for my grandma's 6mm rem and figured I would see what combos everyone else had success with. I was thinking about using 100gr Sierra pro-hunters or something along those line and IMR powder of course. Maybe some 95gr nosler BT's! Not looking for a hot load, just something that will shoot good and put the hammer down on whitetails. Anybody have some tips they would like to share?

max is 48 gr of RL22.

Shot 1.25" at 300 yards yes 300! and 3248 fps from my 26" Ruger #1B

Thanks guys for the input so far. I'm going to pick up the rifle tonight. my grandparents are headed to FL for the winter and she was down to three bullets!

Just in the nick of time. I am with Fotis, I think if I had the pleasure of working with a 6mm Rem, 100gr PT's and RL22 would be where I would start. Scotty

IMR4350 43.4 grs with a 100 gr. Nosler Partition. Works very well for me. Of course work up to it in your rifle. Just played a bit with H4831SC, but as you can see from the target on the right, it was not bad either!! The velocity of that load of H4831SC was almost identical to the IMR4350 load. Might have gotten lucky and hit the barrel harmonics just right. Both of these were out of a Ruger #1B 6mm with the 26" barrel.

My son uses Hodgdon H100V in his 6mm Ruger MKII with the 90 gr. Nosler E-tip. 44.5 grs with it has taken three antelope, a nice mule deer buck, and this last year (2010) at 350 yards with one shot!

From gallon plastic jugs at 100 yards. 6mm 90 gr. E-tip, 30-06 165 gr. AccuBond, 6mm 100 gr. Partition. I sort of notice a Nosler theme here. Now when the 90 gr. 6mm AccuBond finally hits the shelves I'll have to try that one!! I happen to have some R22 on hand and just to satisfy Scotty and Fotis I am going to try some of that with the 100 gr. Partition just to quiet them down a little. :p  I hope this helps. I would not say I hot-rod my loads, but I do like to strive for really nice accurate consistant loads and good speed to match.

Back in 1974 Dad spoiled me rotten with a 700 BDL in 6mm Rem. I shot all sorts of stuff with it. Small things blew up. Bigger things fell down. About six or seven years ago I put the old Remington in a youth stock, and gave it to my youngest son. He's since grown a bit, and the rifle is back in the original walnut stock.

For deer, my all-time favorite load is 48 grains of RL-22 and a 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. It's accurate and fast. First deer my son shot with it was a mule deer doe at 275 yards. She crumpled at the shot and slid down the hill, towards the dirt road. I liked that. Heck of a bullet that not only hits and kills game, but directs it towards the nearest road...

My son handloads for it too, when I'll let him have some bench time. We've substituted 100 gr Nosler Partitions for more penetration, and 100 gr Nosler Solid Base bullets too. Dad gum thing continues to produce. Easy on the shoulder, tough on the deer, coyotes and rock chucks.

Let me know if you want some good varmint busting loads - but I'd stick with 48 grains of Reloader 22 and a 95 or 100 gr Nosler bullet for deer. Flat, fast, accurate and downright devastating on impact.

Regards, Guy

Thanks guys. I just picked up the rifle. It's a very short barreled rem mohawk 600. I think I've made my mind up on the 95gr Nosler BT. Gonna try a few different powders. I have a little over 160 cases that I found for it. Should be able to cook something up!

You managed to pick up a real treasure in the Mohawk chambered in 6mm Remington. Congratulations.

The 95 gr BT should cover all your shooting needs from coyotes to deer.
Post some pics of that M600 Mohawk.

I have almost exclusively loaded 70 gr. BTs in mine, over IMR 4350. I still have enough of the old Federal Premium 100 Partition factory loads to hold me for any big game shooting I've done with it in the last 20 years, which is none.

Thanks DrMike! This rifle is my grandma's and each of us grandkids(5 of us) shot our first deer with it, so it is really special. Here are a couple pics JD.

Not only is this rifle a gem, but it has rich memories for your family. You, sir, have just been blessed with something worth more than great riches.

I wish DrMike, but it's not my gun. It's my grandma's and she would kick my rear if I didn't give it back! Just gonna provide her with a solid load for deer season next year, as they have left for FL already.

Those nice little rifles that also really shoot! My son used his Model 600 Centennial his first year and got his antelope with it using 100 gr. Partitions. He sure likes it. It only has a fixed K4 Weaver on it, but it sure shoots nice.

More memories to follow with your 600. Very cool.

I just got to dial in a Mohawk like that in 243 for a neighbor kid, it was a shooter. His best friend's dad gave it to him so the boys could hunt together and he put a cheap NC star 6x scope on it. He showed up at my place with a box of 90gr Fusion loads and I sighted it in then shot a 3/4" 3 shot group with a much heavier trigger than I shoot well. He shot it also then to check that the zero worked for him and shot the rest of the box at cans at jugs from hunting positions at different ranges. It really was a sweet little rifle, and those bullets looked and shot better than I expected, pretty streamlined boattail design for a cheaper factory load. I'd have loved to own that gun.

Back to the 6mm, I shoot 70gr BT's with superformance for coyotes, and load 100gr Sierra gamekings with H100V for deer season. I sure hope to find an accurate load with the 90gr AccuBond when it comes out and use it for everything. If I was you I'd work up a load for the 90gr ballistic tip and try it with the 90gr AccuBond when it comes out. They will be a little different bullet with a different BC it looks like, but it might be a real good starting point. I bet it will be a heck of a deer bullet from my experiences with the AB in bigger calibers.

The H100V might be worth a shot in your short barrel, or the 4350 range of powders. I'm not sure your barrel is long enough to gain much from 4831 or anything slower.

mcseal2 my son's 6mm Model 600 with the 18 1/2" barrel gets 2800 fps with a 100 gr. Nosler Partition behind 43.0 grs of IMR4350. It shoots great and is flat enough shooting to reach out there a ways. I know I shot a lot of antelope and deer with it before I gave it to my son.

sounds like a heck of a load for a nice handy rifle. I re-barrelled my 20" 243 to a 25" 6mm and while I really like the ballistics and rifle, I am thinking another short 243 or 6mm may be in the future arsenal.

My boy has the M700 Youth in a 243. It has the shorter LOP stock on it, but with a slip on Limbsaver, it is awesome and I can see me sneaking it outta the safe once in awhile. It has a 20" barrel, but it does do 2900FPS with the 100gr PT's and RL19. Pretty sweet little combo really. Scotty
