7-08 Black Bear bullet.

Well, if you want to stick with 140 g. bullets, the Barnes TSX is a bit longer than regular bullets and I've had no trouble getting better than averge accuracy from them. They've shot very nicely from my .257 Robt. and .35 Whelen. I just picked up to boxes each of the 120 and 140 gr, barnes TSX for my 7x57. If they don't work in one of those I'll try the .280 Rem.
Dunno just how well they'll work in 7MM but the way the Barnes 225 TSX clobbered my cow elk a few weeks back, let's just say I was completely impressed.I've been hunting sine 1954 and I have never seen an animal drop as fast as that cow elk. Bang/flop does not come anywhere near describing it. If the .257 and 7mm work that well on deer, I think I'll be hooked on those bullet, even as pricey as thy are.

This gun does shoot the 120 TSX bullets around MOA (about as good as it has ever shot anything else). I'll have to keep the 140 TTSX in mind if I can't get something else figured. The TTSX/ TSX are good bullets, I have had great luck with them in my 338 WM. I just don't like paying for them, as much as I shoot it adds up pretty quick.

R15 has always been the best choice of powder for me with all the 7mm08 rifles (3) in the safe. That has held true for both 120 BT's and 140 grain Swift A-frames.
The burn rates in the Varget, R15 and Vit. N-140 seem to be in that perfect "pocket" for the caliber. Good luck

Thanks. I have some loaded up with Varget to try and if that doesn't work out I'll try some RL-15. I don't think I'll be able to shoot till after Christmas. :(

I have had good luck with both the 140 pt s and the 140 ABs from my wife’s Winchester M 70 compact. Both kill deer with a whole lot of authority; despite being a real pt fan for most calibers I can’t see any advantage over the 140 Abs from the short barreled 7-08. While I have never shot a bear with the 7-08 I often carry it during the time when bear and grouse season is open but nothing else. That compact is a delight to pack. My powder is Rl 19 .

Well no luck with Varget. I was kind of excited when I looked at the target at the range I thought I had a good 1" group, upon further inspection it was not the case. It was two shots mixed in with another group, and a third about five inches out. On to the 140 ABs.

Man, that stinks Jake. I am sure you are getting a little frustrated. Hope you find the load soon buddy. Scotty

The frustrating part is I think that over the life of this gun I have spent close to the same amount it would have cost to rebarel it with a good barrel in bullets and powder trying to get it to shoot with the barrel that is on it now!

Told my wife her gun was pissing me off and that I wanted to send it down the road, and she told me she would just shoot my 280 AI :? So I'm a bit confused as to weather that was permission to build another one for her, or if mine just became hers? Either way, bear bullet broblem solved. I had a three shot group with it tonight with the 140 BT and they printed a nice little .5" triangle group. Thinking that the 140 AB will do the same.

Yah I would say its time to send her on down the road Jake...Hate to see it and say it, but you haven't really had the best of luck with Rem 700's, I seem to have the exact opposite. Id say let her have your 280 AI and you can build your 7 STW...Thats what I'd do!!!

Oh and by the way, you better not shoot anythign with those 140g NBTs, you might end up liking them to much and ask yourself why your even messing with the ABs

For me it would be the 140gr PT for spot and stalk say 70 to 200 yard shooting. If over bait wher shots could be 30-60 yards the 150PT is what I would use. Sorry no B-Tips for bear in the < 30 cal bullets for me. The AB would be fine as well but a sleeper of a 7mm08 bullet is the 145 gr speers the GS145gr would be fine bullet.

That was out of the 7-08 Jake. If it is doing that with BT's I think you will be in great shape once you switch to AB's. Good luck, hope the wife didn't steal your new rifle. Scotty

The 280 AI shot the 140 BTs very well. The 7-08 has scattered the 140 PT and ABs all over the place from day one. When we get to hutning bears I'll switch the 140 BT out for the 140, or 160 AB. If we were talking deer I'd be sticking with the 140 BT just because I have several hundred of them.

I told her she can use it for bears this spring as I want to use my 338 WM or 375 R. But this coming fall when we both have deer tags, I want my gun back!

Good luck with that! If she scores a bear with the rifle, you probably should start looking to build another! Scotty

Nope, when I saw the pictures of your Savage I wanted to start the built right there! Would you build another 280AI or something else? Scotty

Funny you should mention that, I have been thinking about that very question since lastnight. I do love the 280 AI, but I can't have two guns in the same caliber if she wants that one. I might have to look really hard at a 6.5-06 AI on a Rem action so I can get a longer mag for it. Try to keep it around the 8lb mark for a deer packing gun. I do have a 7 STW build planned, but it will be in the 10-11 pound range and build for LR shooting. We'll see I guess.

The 6.5 is really creeping up on me. Although, Savage is already doing a great job in the 6.5 route. They have a few 6.5x284's and 260's. I really like the Predator in a 6.5x284! That would satisfy my 6.5 craziness! Scotty

Jake,

A 6.5-06 AI would be a great cartridge. It would work for almost anything you would want to hunt in the lower 48.
