Not sure why, but I want a project gun to play around with and work on as a backup/loaner for my brother in law next elk season.

I found a very lightly used ADL with iron sights at a shop for $399. Metal is perfect and the stock is synthetic and great shape. It's used, but I have a feeling this maybe saw one range trip.

I figure I can swap triggers, put it in a better stock and have a nice shooter. With 180g Partitions or Accubonds I'll have a great Elk rifle.

I keep Varget, R15, R19 on hand for my other reloading. Any ideas with those loads and those bullets?

Even with 165 grain Partitions, you'll have a good elk rifle. Those are good powders to try for the 30-06. Varget may be a tad faster than I would prefer, but it will get the job done. Nevertheless, I'd likely opt for H100V or H4350 in the powder department.

That would be an awesome back up rifle. Like Mike said, some 165's or 180's would get it done pretty nicely.

Four of us went on a Montana Elk/Mule Deer hunt two years ago. All carried 30/06s. Three were shooting 165gr Partitions and the other was 165gr AccuBond. All scored on Elk and Mulies. No lost animals and no tracking. All were using IMR-4350.Rick.

I bought a BDL in 30-06 with the intent of it becoming a donor action for a 35 Whelen. I cleaned up and lightened the trigger and then fired one load work-up using IMR-4350 and 165gr Partitions through it and now 8 years later it still remains a 30-06. It shot great. It has been a great back-up rifle that has been used by several friends and family members successfully on at least ten animals. I'm almost finished with the bullets I loaded up 8 years ago and I've promised myself to not load more but it will be difficult to tear down such a great shooter.

I can't think of a better choice for the purpose you intend it for.

You got a god deal on the M700 30-06. Should prove to be plenty for elk.
My go to load for the 30-06 180 gr PT was 55.0 grs IMR 4350.

CsC, You never fire the donor! That is precisely the reason for this rule. I've ruined several projects by firing--just one set of rounds--rounds.

Great elk gun and round. I have taken 15 as I recall and most with the 30-06. My favorite all around load is 165 gr Partition (almost any good 165 gr works well) ahead of 57.0 gr H4350. It has shot well in every 30-06 I have used (3-Rem 700, 2-Savage, 1-Winchester, 1-Tikka). It chronographs at 2,933 fps average out of my 1950 Win Mdl 70 with 24" barrel. I believe this is actually a couple of grains below Hodgdon's max. It was fast enough and accurate enough for my purposes...coyote, elk, deer, antelope, I don't remember what all else.

Now if Hodgdon would just make a 4350 SC/SSC I would be really happy. IMR 4350 is a go to powder in several cartridges and it pretty much always works.

My #2 choice sir!

H4350 is your huckleberry!

+1 for the third time. I went through nine rounds doing load workup for my 30-06. I ended up with a max load (according to Hodgdon and confirmed by my observations) of H4350 under a 168gr Nosler BT. Shoots three into just under half an inch routinely enough to be boring, but I figure that's what a -06 is supposed to be - boring. I'm happy with it and wouldn't have any qualms about taking it anywhere for any game on this continent, save the great bears.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm heading over today to pick it up. Let's hope one of the two is still on the shelf. :)

Time for some new dies while I'm there...

The best part? No work Thursday and Friday, so it's range day, all day!

As it has been said many times,,,"can't go wrong with the .30-06".
Another for H-4350, as it's my favorite with both 165's and 180 gr. weights.

My .280 was built off of an ADL 30-06............so many choices......

Next you'll be looking for a barrel to screw on that thing!

Another powder that worked extremely well for me was H414. My '06 happen to like 55.5gn of it to push a 180AB at 2830fps.

And of course 53.5gn of H4350 was ideal for the 180ET at 2750fps

Rich,

Those targets certainly make me want to ditch what I'm doing and work up some loads with my 30-06. Great shooting.
